How do I get the door panel off a 1997 Toyota Corolla when the door will not open?

Both the front doors are closed and locked. Neither will open with key or by pulling the door lock up. Cannot open either door from inside or outside.

You have two options for this.First is to tear the door panel out, break it apart. Not an easy task. Second (which is not an easy task ether), You have to remove the front seat/s. Being a 97, they most likely bolt from the bottom of the car. These bolts/ nuts are old and rusty. You can't put heat to them, unless you won't to torch the car. They are going to break. If your lucky, they will come off. If not, then you have to weld new studs in place. After that look for any screws around door handles, arm rests, and any plastic plugs you see on the panel. After that you have to start popping the panel off. Plastic plugs hold it on. These will break also. After the panel is off,Reach in and open the door, then look at the bottom of the door( more like feel down there) and find the rods. Then you will have to find the plastic clips the hold the rods in place. Luckily, auto parts stores are starting to carry them. But again, being a 97, your are going to have to mix and match to find something that will work. Good luck on your endeavors.

The answers given don't even address the question of how to remove the door panel when the door won't open from inside or outside. I have the same problem and would like to remove the door panel to see what might be causing the problem. It's frustrating climbing over the console ever single time I get in and out of the car.

The door gaskets could be frozen to the body, or you could have ice in the door latches.

I have the same problem on a Toyota Tercel 1997. I am trying to remove the door panel with the door closed (I can not open the door because the door knob is stuck in the lock position). I think I will have to cut through the panel. Have you found something ? My e-mail is philippe_oreilly@yahoo.ca
