Chevy Venture 1997 Engine Idle rough with fluctuations

My chevy venture 97 recently started having idle fluctuations from very low to normal. It does run ok otherwise. Temperature guage stays less than mid-point when running at higher speeds/rpms. Engine also vibrates quite a bit at idle.

Recent services include trans & oil change service, thermostate and heater core changed. In the past, I have had the head gasket and engine valve lifters changed.

  • ashu9211 Jan 27, 2009

Looks like this problem is a result of some recent services, as it did not exist before. Any other thoughts?

Gasket is checked out already and is tight. Any other ideas?

This series of engines are also known to have intake gasket leaks that leak into the engine, causing this type of issue. This situation can cause extreme and rapid damage to the engine's internal bearing surfaces. Driven long enough with this type of problem results in a required engine rebuild or replacement

Though other possible causes,do exist

Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls and low idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve (IAC for short), they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

Bfore you do anything more expensive I would try some good dry gas/ injector cleaner and perhaps a new fuel filter.

Hi

Kindly check for gasket(it might be loose or faulty) as when the car is running at high speed(s) there is a tendency of air entering into engine which makes it to vibrate. This can also effect other parts of the vehicle as well so you need it to be replaced .

Thanks
Rylee

I would say that the voltage variation is not significant. However, you need either an oscilloscope, or an analogue volt meter with a needle, not digital. I'll assume you don't have a scope. In addition to the voltages at idle and at full throttle, using the meter, slowly move the throttle from idle to full and back again. You can do this from under the hood or with someone working the accelerator pedal. You should see a nice smooth transition from the low to high and back again. You can check this using resistance as opposed to voltage as well. The car does not have to be running or have voltage to check this using resistance. Any jumping at all and the TPS should be changed. It should be perfectly smooth. You can buy an analogue meter at Radio Shack for under $10.

Check air filter. Check for any vacuum leaks. Check condition of plug wires. Were new plugs pre-gapped? If not, make sure the spark gap is correct for your vehicle.

well certain comp loss up to 75psi will still keep the engine running.with less power and a little shaky motor but driveable.check fuel pressure to get that out of way.next test inigition module to see why the 3 cylinder are not getting spark.if he changed the coils.prob sounds like a second option is in order.i say so because, myself in my shop we test the eletic components first before just replacing them.costing customers more money.module first than coils then wires than plugs.theirs an order to dionoising the problem.components must be checked before replacing them.now if comp psi is very low say 50psi than replacing the head gaskets will be in order.

That sounds like a vacuum problem due to something in your vac system went bad or got plugged or even unplugged. I would start there.

Running "rough"

I had the same issue with my venture. It turned out to be the number 5 plug wire, backside of engine ended up breaking out of the plug carrier and burning in half on the manifold. Your best bet is to trace all the wires to start off with and change the plugs. If that doesn't help, it may be internal. Good luck
