Question about 1997 Jeep Cherokee

1997 Grand Cherokee trans hangs up on 2-3 shift

1997 2 wd 4 liter, 98K miles, no prior problems. When cold the trans will hang on the shift from 2 to 3 (RPM stays up then slips into 3rd gear). Other gears ok/. Once warm there is no problem. Replaced fluid filter, no metal found, just typical sludge on magnet.

The transmission fluid and filter should be changed every 30k miles. Now I am guilty of not doing this, so I've had to deal with alternate methods of coaxing my vehicle to work! My 1997 jeep has the same issue when it is cold. I have found that with letting it warm up, just for a few minutes, will solve this issue. The next step is attempting a trans flush. Not really a good idea if the maintenence was neglected in the past. Once you get to about 90k -100k, you stand the chance of doing more harm than good with the flush. Sometimes it's that **** in the tranny keeping it together!!

I just boughgt a 94 jeep with 318 motor. would stop moving in reverse and then hit in kind of hard . I found the transmission fluid 2 quarts low. It seems to hit all auto gears without slipping now. Is ity blikely tyhat the tranny is hurt??

Overdrive Control Switch
The overdrive control switch is located in the instrument
panel. In the On position, automatic shifts
into fourth gear overdrive will occur. In the Off position,
the switch overrides the powertrain control module
preventing a shift to overdrive fourth gear range.
The switch has an indicator light that illuminates
when overdrive is turned off. The switch also resets
when the ignition key is turned to the OFF position
so that the automatic overdrive feature is restored.
The use of fault codes is employed to help diagnose
the electronic components that operate the overdrive
unit and torque converter clutch.

I have to error code with my jeep grand Cherokee Laredo 1999 the code are 1491,1495,753,136

P1491 Rad Fan Control Relay Circuit An open or shorted condition detected in the radiator fan control relay control circuit. This includes PWM solid state relays.P1495 Leak Detection Pump Solenoid Circuit An open or shorted condition detected in the Leak Detection Pump (LDP) solenoid circuit.P0753 (M) Trans 3-4 Shift Sol/Trans Relay Circuits An open or shorted condition detected in the overdrive solenoid control circuit or Trans Relay Circuit in JTEC RE transmissions. Was MIL code 45. Aside from getting into an accident and having your wiring harness severely damaged, the other likely suspect is your PCM. These codes are not related to each other and indicate a much larger problem.

Drain fluid into a clean plastic bowl, check for brass cuttings or metal shavings in sunlight. If present get complete trans overhaul.

2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee shifting problem from 2nd to 3rd

Check the kick down cable. If it sticks the transmission won't shift. I sprayed WD-40 on both the top and bottom connectors , and it worked like a charm. It's alot cheaper them spending 2000 on a new transmission you don't really need.

My 1993 grand cherokee v8 automatic jeep selects gear 1 and 2, it does not select 3 and 4 pls help thanks

In automatic transmissions the second to third syncronizers always seem to go bad first, the syncronizers are worn, bad or gone. This is common in these transmissions. Also you might check your trans fluid level, sometimes a low level will cause the transmission not to shift correctly.

Don't know how to use 4WD on 1995 jeep cherokee

the jeep cherokee has 2 different types of 4 wd systems. the command trac has 2 wd, 4hi, neutral and 4 low. if driving on pavement make sure it's in 2 wd. it also has shift on the fly, up to 60 mph you can move the lever to 4 hi and it will not hurt anything. if trying to go to 4 low, be rolling less than 5mph and put the trans shifter in neutral and move the 4wd selector to 4 low. do the reverse to move back to 4 hi or 2 wd
