How does idle relay work

Mercedes190e 1993 will start and die after 4 or 5 seconds , never continues to run

It works together with throttle position sensor .

Choking out

Are you sure its not really running out of gas ?
The fuel pump gets power from the pump relay for 3 seconds when you crank the engine, then the computer must "see" oil pressure or RPM to allow the relay to continue powering the pump.
The pump relay may not be working, or the pump may be faulty.

I replaced the fuel pump on my 2004 1500 5.7 liter. Started at first but only ran at idle for a few seconds and died. Now i have no fuel pressure at all. Also the wiring connection at top of fuel pump

gotta start with the color code of the wiring. verify that is correct first. you have to have fuel pressure for it to run obviously so make sure you wired it correctly. Here is the color code according to Mitchell OnDemand
black/orange= ground for fuel pump
orange/red=power on for fuel pump(only gets triggered from fuel pump relay)
dark blue/white= signal to pcm for fuel level
dark blue/ dark green= ref voltage

If that is ok then check for relay activation. Fuse 17 is the power source for that relay. If you have a good fuse but no relay activation you could throw a relay at it but if that doesnt do it then its gotta go to a shop. But if you are curious....
Relay code
pin 30= hot at all times
pin 86= relay control trigger from the pcm
pin 85= hot in run or start
pin 87= power source to fuel pump.(i.e. orange/red wire)

the relay will have numbers on it designating the correct pins. Get that right first then move on to the next. I'll be here. Good luck!

85 vette starts runs a few seconds dies. could it be a crank shaft sencer

if you need to keep your foot on the gas to keep it running clean the throttle body and idle speed motor

Start up and die

If it will eventually start and run, I would check the fuel pressure at startup. The fuel pump relay provides power to the pump for 3 or 4 seconds and if the computer does not "see" oil pressure it will not continue to power the pump. That is to prevent a fire in a wreck.

My car dies out after ten minutes of driving, then it won't start until after it cools down. I just changed the main relay. What could it be?

Find the EGR valve on or near your intake. It will have on vacuum line connected to it. Start the engine when it is cold and wait for it to warm up. Once it begins to stumble and die, remove the vacuum hose from the EGR and if the engine holds idle and continues running, replace the EGR. It should be 2 bolts to remove and might have a gasket you will need to replace. It should be a fairly inexpensive repair that you can do yourself. Please rate me on this answer.

Why would a 1990 Chev. Start hard and die shortly after starting in cooler weather? It should go into high idle immediately and run fine... It will crank over for 4 or 5 seconds, then fire and die shortly...

Sounds like the fuel supply through is inadequate. That is a Want-to-be fuel injection system that uses a relay to enrichen the gas mixture.

Solution could be a container of fuel system cleaner, and a spray or two of carb cleaner in the injector.

Other causes could be:
Failure of the "choke" to richen the gas mixture
Vacuum line leakage.
Fuel filter becoming clogged

My Mazda mx3 starts up idles for a couple seconds then dies.

Before you replace the fuel pump, I would check the cheaiper parts first. Such as fuel filter and injectors.
