Question about Saturn SL

Open Question

My computer is giving the following codes, P0340, P0341, P0442, and P1404. These codes were given to me after my car failed the drive clean test. I'm just wondering what they mean so I have some idea about how much I'm going to need to fix it.

  • Most likely cause : Camshaft position sensor failed.

Hi..
the Code P0340, Camshaft Position sensor problem or Loss signal.
The Code P0341, Camshaft Position sensor Intermitent Signal.

The First step you should do is : Locate the Camsahaft sensor,
Is located On Right Front of the Engine..
It use a 3 wires Connector.
1-- Pink/Yellow
2-- Brown/Orange
3-- Dark blue/Gray.

After you found it. Inspect the Connector. If is The connector in good condition.
Replace the Camshaft Position sensor...

all of the above codes seem to have a common cause, they all list a bad ecm (computer) as being a cause, and the last code P0601 points specifically to a bad computer. sorry for the bad news, hope this helps.

That code is the EGR. I'd start by checking for a bad connection on the EGR plug-in. Pull the connector off and inspect each individual terminal inside the plug and the connector pins inside the EGR valve.
I found this solution at another forum on this issue. It worked on my 2001 Grand Am:

"Many GM built cars have a tendency to have the 'Check Engine Soon' light come on as a result of DTC code P1404. P1404 is described as EGR valve pintle stuck open, which in most cases is a false alarm. I had this happen with my '01 Grand Am. A little bit surfing on internet reveals that GM has a solution for the problem, a re-flash for the car's computer.

A software re-flash as a fix kind of indicates that the vehicles with this problem were built with it but I don't think GM will be re-flashing cars outside warranty for free. They will want their $100 for it.

Some hands on people I found had purchased a new EGR valve and changed it but the problem remained.

Possible reason (very likely) for the false P1404 code is that the plastic piston of the EGR valve position instrument (LVDT?) wears over time and starts reading a different position at valve closed than what it was when the EGR valve was first installed.

When the car was built and the computer circuits energized for the first time the computer learned the EGR valve closed position signal from the valve position instrument that is built on top of the valve itself. Over time, when the instrument wears, a slightly different signal is sent to the computer and when it differs enough from the 'Valve Closed Signal', that the computer had learned, the trouble code P1404 is set and the 'Service Engine Soon' light comes on.

Replacing the EGR valve with a new one does not necessarily fix this problem because the 'Valve Closed Signal' between valves is slightly different and it is just pure luck if your new valve would give a 'Valve Closed Signal' close enough to your original valve's signal not to set the trouble code. This is why the new EGR valve 'Valve Closed Signal' must be re-learned by the computer.

So, what this all means is that if the P1404 is a false code meaning that the valve pintle is not stuck open, then new 'Valve Closed Signal' can be re-learned by the computer using the old valve.

For fixing this problem the tool you need to have is a simple OBD II code scanner that can be used to erase trouble codes. There are many scanners of different price range on the market. I purchased one from AutoZone for about $90.

A code scanner is a very handy tool to have and I recommend everybody who is just slightly hands on type of a person to get one. It will end up saving a lot of money over time.

The fix goes like this:

1. Disconnect the wire harness from the EGR valve.

2. Turn key ON and erase the trouble code(s) from the car's computer AND TURN KEY OFF IMMEDIATELY WHEN THE SCANNER SAYS CODES HAVE BEEN ERASED. DO NOT TURN KEY ON BEFORE YOU RE-CONNECT EGR WIRE HARNESS.

3. Re-connect EGR wire harness and your problem should be fixed.

I learned this fix from OBDII.COM where carfixer and kozloski discussed it and I think kozloski was the one who provided the solution, so thanks to them.

There was also other people stating that this fix really works. Now I have joined this group of people as I got mine fixed using this trick also.

I believe erasing codes with wire harness disconnected and turning the key OFF right after P1404 code has been erased re-sets the 'Valve Close Position' reading in the computer and triggers computer to re-learn position next time the key is turned ON.

If you don't have an OBD II scanner and don't want to buy one some car part stores may erase the code for free, but if you have it done there you must tell them about turning the key OFF at the right moment. Other wise the re-learn process does not take place.

Hello Momma.
This code has set because a fault was detected in the exhaust gas recirculation system (EGR).
If your car is running normally, no chugging or rough running, it isn't a serious issue. But you should have it looked at to determine why it set.
Often it's because the pin inside the EGR valve is sticking or carboned.
If this valve sticks it can allow exhaust gas into the intake when it should not be and cause your engine to stumble at idle or low speeds.
It will not damage anything over a short period of time.

Three codes p0442 p0340 p0742 2006 Hyundai accent 1.6 it cranks but will not start ?


The first code is for an evaporative emission canister leak and it might be due to a gas cap. The second one is for a cam sensor circuit problem and this will keep the vehicle from starting. The third error is for the transmission torque converter.

or work on vehicles

You need a shop to properly diagnose it,you know that

Any codes can be Googled to look them up

Type: OBD & the code

Codes have little to do with replacing parts

No parts get replaced until they are tested & fail a test

P1404 is an EGR code for this application! (P1404 EGR Valve Closed Position Performance). You should clean the EGR valve and then there is a procedure to reset the learned voltage value, it may be alright but it has to relearn the voltage! To do this : The code sets if the PCM sees voltage that is more than 0.29 volts above the learned minimum. The engine needs to be RUNNING when the DTC is cleared. Clearing the DTC also triggers the closed EGR minimum voltage relearn. If you clear the DTC with the key on, engine off, the voltage may be high enough when the engine is running to trigger the code again.

How to reset computer on Saturn 2001 LS - did not pass air pollution test. Three codes came up P0133, P0341, P0442. The car runs fine. Check engine light is on.


Resetting the computer isnt going to fix anything. Get it repaired. If you reset it, it still will not pass if the monitors have not run and passed.

P0442 code relating to the EVAP (Evaporative Emission System).a small emissions leak. also check the gas cap .Try cleaning the seals first and then try putting a little vaseline on the seals before getting a new gas cap. -------------
Code P0442-Evaporative emission control system. Canister Purge system failed the monitor test indicating a large leak (over 0.040”). Enabling conditions: Engine running after a 6 to 8 hour engine off period called a cold soak. The test runs when engine load is between 15 to 45% and inlet air temperature between 40 and 130°F. Blocking Action: This code can block the following monitors: Fuel Control, O2 monitor, Catalyst Monitor, misfire monitor. Testing: Check the purge hoses for leaks, leaking vapor management valve or loose gas cap.

This simply indicates that there was no flow from the evap system when the purge valve was energized. This could be cause of a few different reasons. First, check for leaks by visually looking at all evap lines for cranks rips or any tears. Basically, anywhere that fuel vapors can escape.
----------- Here is the test that will smoke the system for leaks with a smoke machine.

Evaporative Emission System Leak Test

SPECIAL TOOL(S)

CAUTION: The evaporative emission system must not be pressurized to more than 3.48 kPa (14 inches H2O)or damage to the evaporative emission system may occur.
  1. Connect the Evaporative Emission System Leak Tester to the evaporative emission test port.
  2. Close the canister vent solenoid.
  3. Pressurize the evaporative emission system to 3.48 kPa (14 inches H2O) .
  4. Monitor the system for two minutes . The system fails the leak test if the pressure falls below 2.0 kPa (8 inches H2O) .
  5. Repair any leaks as necessary.
  6. Repeat the leak test until the system remains above 2.0 kPa (8 inches H2O) after the two-minute test period.

Wont take fuel took to auto zone and 4 codes came up P1404 auxillary emission control-P0442 small vacuum leak-P0340 camshaft sensor-P1507 vehicle speed control. Can I replace these parts myself? Does any...


I would try to find and fix the vacuum leak, as this will be causing other problems, like the emission control.. other than that I am afraid I can be of little help.
