Acrid smell from engine compartment, transmission jerky

Acrid smell from engine compartment (3.4L V6). I thought it might be the alternator, upon replacement, smell did not go away. Auto transmission shifts are jerky, Transmission oil is at proper level, 106 K is the mileage.

This wasn't it. It was diagnosed as a cracked head or cylinder. Bad news!!!!!! Should I try Bar's Leak?

  • Vitally Alcher Feb 03, 2013

This sounds like you have a dirty transmission filter . I would change the filter and transmission fluid on it . That should fix the problem but if it does not check the vacuum line to make sure it is on and not leaking.

Check the fluid level on your clutch slave cylinder. Have someone depress the clutch while visually observing the movement of the levers under the hood. Could also be a bad throwout bearing.

Tv emitting unpleasant smell. I seem to be only one who can smell! thought radiator causing so turned off but remains. is it dangerous? My four mth old is in the bedrooom until 6 mths. Get rid of tv?

I always recommend getting rid of the TV. It frees up so much time to do really cool things! But to your point, if the smell is of "warm" electronics it is relatively harmless. If it smells acrid, then keep an eye on it. Seriously though, I wouldn't have an infant in the same room with a television. They don't need all that stimulus. What they do need is floor time with interesting objects they can play with. This exploration period is so important for their development! You made a career choice by having kids and my best advice is to put the needs of the little one way ahead of the convenience of television. Been there.

2004 Chrysler Voyager, had an acrid burning smell and a lot of smoke when heater is turned on, also a rattling/squealing noise, all stops when heater turned off?

you more than likely have a sciezed air con compressor. most modern cars have climate control which uses air con even when demisting and when engaged the electric clutch tries to engage but the pump itself will not turn, clutch will get red hot and burn your belts

Manual transmission won't go into gear

Sounds like the clutch disc is toast.
Its possible the throw-out bearing has failed, but either way the transmission has to come out to fix either part.

2004 Golf 2.0FSI auto transmission, 77,000 kms, dealer serviced since new, one owner (my wife). Auto trans is slipping and not selecting gears/keeping gears properly. Is this a common problem? VW dealer...

Check fluid level first to ensure that there is enough hydraulic pressure for brake bands and clutches to engage fully. Have the engine running in 'park' and remove the transmission fluid dip stick. Check level, colour and smell: it should be pink/red with no hint of any burnt aroma. If it is tinged brown this is due to clutch surface material wearing away. The acrid over cooked smell will arise if the brake bands are continuously slipping and generating heat. If the level looks low top with extra fluid via the transmission dipstick tube (do not confuse this with the gearbox oil dipstick) VW is a popular make and there will be auto transmission specialists out there with extensive knowledge. It would be no harm phoning around to ask for them to give it an assessment and then to ask the cost of adjustment, overhaul, repair or replacement.

I am getting a acrid smell out of the vents when the heat is on. 2002 Ford Expedition, Eddie Bauer.

The first thing i would do is change the cabin air filter. If the smell is something like rotten eggs, it may be a catalytic convertor issue. if this is the case, you should have a check engine light on. Also check your battery and see if it swollen. if it is it may be releasing gasses

Bad smell coming from heater/ smoke coming out vents

I had the same problem in my 98 Dodge Dakota! Replaced the heater core, problem solved. No more funky coolant smell and erie fog coming through my vents. I bought the heater core at online. Have purchased many items now from them. All factory parts so far at half the price of even AutoZone, even with the shipping. Also, you usually have to wait only a couple of days depending on the part and they have EVERYTHING.
