A possible fuel pump pressure issue. You will need to have a garage check the fuel line pressure. The engine requires more fuel on cold start and a failing pump may not be able to cope with supply. This may also be apparent at high revs, but not as apparent as cold start.
need to check fuel pressure, not just listen for pump to run, also check reading on coolant temp sensor, but sounds like fuel pump /filter issue. just because you hear pump run doesnt mean its putting our right amount of pressure. also check for plugged catylic convertor
step one- need silence- insert key - turn to on- not start- listen for fuel pump whine- if here nothing- check 1- fuel pump fuse 2- fuel pump wiring (double check your ground!). if pump still does not make whine(pressurizing) your pump is gone. an intermitant pump can be a ground issue or a bad pump most times....
You're either out of gas or you need a new fuel pump. Roll the keys back to the 'off' position. Have someone sit by the back tire and listen as you roll the key forward until the lights on the dash come on DO NOT CRANK THE ENGINE OVER.
If they hear the pump then you're out of gas, if they don't hear the pump your pump is likely burned up.
if u took the bed off to change the fuel pump make sure u hook the ground back up to the frame the ground should be on the driver side behind the tank,u need to change the fuel pump relay when u change a fuel pump because it could be bad to cause the first pump to quit working. not the right amount of volts or to much volts, the relay is under the hood in the fuse box,
Have you tried removing the chip, reseting the pcm, then test drive without the chip, I do not work on diesels but I know I have had some 5.0s with compatibility problems with performance chips, for some reason on select cars the emissions system would through a fit and make the car run like crud with the chip in ran fine with it out although they accused it ran fine for a few months with the chip. if you havent you might try this just to see
first you take the negative side off the battery and then you put the car on jackstands and put something in front of the front wheels so the car does not roll and then spray some W-D-40 on the bolts and let it sit for a while before you try to start to loosen the bolt also you need a floor jack with a small board on top of the jack so you do not put a hole in you gas tank and once you have the tank down be careful not to break any of the wires on top of the tank and then in the center remove the ring and then you have your fuel pump out
I would be really careful with doing this repair as this is very dangerous. You need to relieve the fuel pressure by pulling the fuel pump fuse and starting the truck. Drain the tank with a siphon pump. Remove any exhaust or other parts that are in the way, loosen the straps and support the tank with a floor jack and a block of wood. There are several hoses, and a few wire connectors to disconnect and you may want to replace those hoses while you're down there. Once you put the new tank in, reconnect the electrical and hoses, raise the tank and strap it back up. Put anything else back together you took off the truck.
Personally, I would take this in to get fixed as this is dangerous work (I did mention that). I you do this anyway, use your head and buy a proper container to hold the gas in , as well as jackstands and a class "B" fire extinguisher. Disconnect the battery and don't smoke or use a drop light under the car, and I will not accept responsibility for this.
