Begin by checking the THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR. This is your most likely culprit.

carbon build up in your intake ,,pour 1 entire can of Sea Foam in your gas and 6 ounces in your oil to allow this fast acting solution to burn that gum and carbon as well as moisture completely out ,,change your oil about the 400 mile mark as those broke down carbons and **** is in your oil ,,,you will be running smooth ..do not worry about that exhaust being smoked up ,,it will clear in 30 minutes or less...also after ,,,check your engines coil or coils and or distributor

Hi. I have a 99 nissan altima. My problem is with it dying in gear. Forward or reverse. It runs a little rough at idle (about 500 r.p.m) you can rev it up to 3-4000 no problem, as long as it is in neutral...

Check the throttle positioning sensor and the transmission, it sound loke the sensor is givving bad information to the computer whis is cutting the engine when in gear, this might cause the transmission to break its syncro plate if it slamms in and out of gear.

Crank sensors on 2003 nissan altima 2.5

there are two and they caused me all kinds of hell when i had my altima. one is center right side of the engine. it looks like a small plug. the other is further down on the left of the engine. it looks almost like a rechargable battery with a circle on the top. they cost me 30 a piece at any foreign parts store.
