Question about Hyundai i40
Occasional event - reverse off drive lift gear lock ring to take out of reverse. The ring lifts but car will not come out of gear. After sometimes many attempts it just works fine and comes out of gear as if nothing has happened. Just not good blocking roads while you try and release it ..

Brian... i would respectfully advise you that the other site that bocon has given you is a scam.
I'm not sure if you are driving in winter conditons.... but first replace the interlock relay and see if that corrects the problem... and it should. it is indeed the interlock solenoid that will need to be replaced.

You will have to remove the panel covering the latch from the inside.Unhook it and you should be able to open it by prying up on it with a screwdriver.[Do these trucks not come with a rear hatch key?Don't know, just asking]

I think the shift inter-lock solenoid was stuck at the time. it can also be your brake switch did not make contact. next time check your brake lights to see if they work while it hapen. so just wait!
