Have you checked for it just in back of crankshaft pulley? Should be on the car's forward facing side in back of crank pulley. Partially hidden, but the connector should be visible when looking from underneath car. If it is there, the pulley will have to come off for replacing the sensor.

What years 3.1 engine will fit in 1998 pontiac grand prix

Unfortunately it's a (relatively) one year only engine (without major component changes). However, these will fit without those changes:

'97, '98, '99 Buick Century,

'98, '99 Lumina (car),

'98, '99 Grand Prix,

'99, Monte Carlo.

This is assuming that you have an (8th digit) "M" VIN. Off the top of my head.

If its a 3.1 or 3.4 it will be on backside of the motor(inbetween motor and firewall....in the engine block..near the front of motor....if its a 3.8, it will be on the front, located close to the crank shaft pulley...
