    It is automatic. No it has been going on for awhile like I'd say like 3months but it wasn't frequent like it is now. My dad told me he thinks it is a censor or something but I need an exact answer. So please if you know what's happening or have had this happen let me know.
    Thank you

    I'm really sorry that Im not explaining this well. Okay It runs fine in forward correct. In reverse it stalls and I have to restart it to get going again. It just kinda shakes then stalls and I have to restart it. My check engine light comes on and my check gauges. And i've checked all of them and there was no problem, and my engine is new.. so i have no idea... thanks

    It runs fine in the forward gears? Only stalls in reverse? Working on the problem, it is an odd one. Let me know.

    Is your truck a manual shift or automatic? Did the problem just start?

Hi Michelle;
I know this is frustrating but I do not want you to throw money at your truck when it is not necessary. The 91 is an OBD1 system. Have you downloaded the codes? I can be of more assistance if I have the codes to diagnois. You definetly have a problem, I wan to solve it.
Since you just had a new engine installed and then the problem started, I would look very closely at the fuel lines. Perhaps the engine torque is pinching a flex line. Perhaps when you engage reverse, something is hitting and grounding out. It seems to me when you engage reverse the torque rolls the engine to far and maybe grounds out the coil. Are your motor mounts in good shape? Check by opening the hood, put your foot on the brake hard, engage reverse, and keeping your foot hard on the brake, give it gas. If the engine rolls up off the mount the mount is broken. You may need to have someone help you with this.
Let's keep talking. I really want to help.

This problem is commonly caused by a dirty automatic idle speed control valve and throttle valve but always run a OBD2 (1996 and newer) or a OBD1 (1995 and older) fault code as well as the cleaning procedure. Buy a can of throttle valve cleaner (do not use carburetor spray cleaner!) from NAPA or Carquest (made by CRC chemicals) and spray it into the air intake while the engine is running, use up about 1/2 the can, engine will try to stall hold the speed up, shut it down and let it soak for 30 minutes, restart and blow out the remaining fluid, shut it down and disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 Min's to reset the base idle control

Randon stall, no start

If it is the 2.5 v6 , you most likely need the distributor replaced. If it is the 2.4l cam and crank sensors would be most likely cause.

Why does my 91 VW Jetta stall out and lose power while driving?

I had a similar problem and the mechanic diagnosed it as a problem with the ignition coil. So you might want to get that checked.

Pick up a copy of Haynes Diesel Engine Repair Manual, Part # 10330, at your local auto parts store. It has an excellent diagnostic section, check page 1-44. It's a must have for a diyer with a diesel motor. It costs about $20.
