Question about 1997 Nissan Pickup
How much in parts and labor will a timing belt cost
The check engine light is warning the driver the computer has found a problem that will affect engine performance or emissions. The light would not come on for a problem with the timing belt or accessory belts.
87,000 miles is around the time most companies recommend replacing the timing belt.
You would need to have the computer scanned for trouble codes to proceed with troubleshooting the problem or problems.

Have an auto parts place scan for the engine codes, then do some research on the codes to determine what's causing the light to come on. Replace belts ($40 and and hour). Don't worry about the chain unless you hear a clattering when starting up in the mornings. These trucks tend to have chain guides wear causing the chain to clack against the metal guide until the tensioner oil pressure builds up.Replacing the chain is an 6 hour job in the driveway.

SOURCE: timing belt 1994 nissan altima
My 1994 Altima has a timing chain on it and these are supposed to last the life of the engine. I would say unless you can really hear the problem then to leave it alone.

I recommend 60-90K Cost depends on the dealerships labor but usually when your doing a timing belt, radiator hoses and fan belts are removed and should be replaced while your in there. Its about 3hrs, more if other things need to be replaced while in there. So you looking at $300+ for labor only
