Need a shop to test it, before just replacing
a part,has to fail a test as with any part, before
needing to be replaced

Exhaust gas recirculation module check:


1. Note the Differential Pressure Feedback Exhaust Gas Recirculation (DPFE) sensor voltage through the scan tool or backprobe the Brown/Light Green (BN/LG) wire of the Exhaust Gas Recirculation System Module (ESM). Voltage should indicate a reading of 0.5-1.2 volts.

2. If the voltage of the DPFE sensor is out of range, low or high, disconnect the ESM and note that the voltage of the DPFE sensor circuit should indicate a reading of 5.0 volts.

3. If the DPFE sensor voltage is out of range connected and the reading shows 5.0 volts with the ESM disconnected, reconnect the ESM and verify that the Brown/White (BN/WH) wire shows a 5.0 volt reading and that the Grey/Red (GY/RD) wire shows to be a good ground, indicating a voltage of less than 0.1 volts. If these circuits check to be ok, replace the ESM due to a faulty DPFE sensor.

4. If the DPFE sensor voltage in step 1 is found to be ok, verify that both vacuum hoses to the ESM have full engine vacuum to them when it's running.

5. With the engine idling, backprobe the Brown/Pink (BN/PK) wire and hold it to ground. This should activate the Exhaust Gas Recirculation Vacuum Regulator (EVR) solenoid of the ESM. The EGR valve should open, the engine should run rough, and the DPFE sensor voltage should climb.

6. Replace the ESM for a faulty EGR valve, EVR solenoid, or DPFE sensor if the DPFE sensor or engine does not respond to ground activation of the BN/PK wire

- Differential Pressure Feedback Electronic (DPFE) sensor harness is open or shorted
- Differential Pressure Feedback Electronic (DPFE) sensor circuit poor electrical connection. This is not likely the EGR but the EGR pressure sensing valve.

DPFE sensor failures are VERY COMMON on Ford vehicles. However, clogged EGR ports are also very common on 5.4L Ford engines. The DPFE sensor is located on the left side of the engine. It connects to two silicone rubber hoses that connect to the steel EGR tube coming from the back of the engine to the EGR valve. (See picture of the sensor below)

Another common failure is a DPFE sensor that has melted due to excessive exhaust back-pressure. If you find the DPFE sensor melted, suspect a restricted exhaust. (smashed tailpipe, clogged catalytic converter, etc..)

Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P1401 indicates that Self-Test has detected DPFE sensor circuit input above the maximum.

Possible causes:

-- DPFE SIG open.

-- DPFE SIG shorted to VREF or PWR.

-- VREF shorted to PWR.

-- SIG RTN open.

-- Damaged DPFE sensor.

-- Damaged PCM.

I have a sensor on an 03 Ford Explorer...part # 4u7e-9j460-aa7d19aj397m7997. What sensor is this?


This is the DPFE(Delta Pressure Feedback) sensor. Some places may call it an EGR(Exhuast Gas Recirculation) sensor but that's not really what it is.

Do you mean "DPFE"? DPFE stands for Delta Pressure Feedback EGR sensor. It is the sensor that tells your onboard computer whether the EGR Valve is opening up when it is told (by the computer) to do so. It has 2 hoses made of high temperature silicone that connect to two small metal tubes that protrude from the larger metal tube that connects the EGR Valve to the exhaust maifold. Sometimes the high temperature exhaust gasses will burn the DPFE sensor nipples if the vehicle is equipped with the black plastic DPFE sensor. This is sometimes caused by a restriction in the exhaust system such as a bent pipe or a clogged catalytic converter. In such cases, replacement of the DPFE sensor alone will result in a repeat repair.
If your vehicle has a build date prior to May 2002. there is a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) pertaining to your DPFE sensor - I would recommend having it checked out by a professional.

Check engine light with code p1401


Recirculation (EGR) valve codes. The Differential Pressure Feedback EGR (DPFE) sensors on these vehicles have a high failure rate. Ford now uses a redesigned DPFE sensor. In effect, since the failure rate is so high, if you get this code, replace the sensor and retest. When the DPFE Sensor starts failing, it gives the PCM bad information. The DPFE Sensor is less sensitive, and the PCM thinks less recirculated gas is being burned than is actually so. Trying to compensate, the PCM opens up the actuator too much. This excessive amount of EGR combined with the air coming in via the throttle body leans out the fuel mixture, causing a lean misfire, which is the "stumble" or "hesitation" that is common as the DPFE Sensor fails. The DPFE sensor in the Focus is not very robust, requiring frequent (every 30k miles or sometimes less) replacement or a work around. Note that complete DPFE sensor failure is a very slow process, and the check engine light won't come on until the DPFE sensor is pretty much done for. If you're experencing stumble or hesitation while cruising, and think that it might be related to DPFE sensor failure. If the stumble goes away, then your DPFE sensor is more than likely failing. Of course, replacement of the bad DPFE sensor is the official recommended fix for this problem.

Insufficient EGR Flow Detected

Possible Causes:
DPFE sensor signal circuit is shorted to ground
DPFE sensor VREF circuit is open between sensor and PCM
DPFE sensor downstream hose off or plugged
DPFE sensor hoses both off, loose or damaged
DPFE sensor hoses connected wrong (reversed)
EGR orifice tube is damaged or restricted
PCM has failed
And what sets the code is…….Engine started, engine running in closed loop under steady cruise conditions, and the PCM detected the DPFE sensor input indicated insufficient EGR gas flow. Run the KOER Self-Test, and if DTC P1408 is present, the fault is currently present. This code sets in 2 Trip(s). The light will stay on until the cause is repaired. A bad EGR valve is only on possible cause.

DPFE Sensor with codes PO401 And PO402


The DPFE is located near the EGR valve, it has 2 very thick silicone rubber hoses connected to it that come off the exhaust. It is rectangular and about 1/2 the size of a pack of smokes
