Question about 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe

2004 Hyundai Sante Fe running rough after fuel light came on, check engine light came on.

Car was low on gas. Stopped at store. Started car and it began acting like it wanted to die. Check engine light came on. Had to drive it home using both brake and gas so it would not die. Added gas. No change. This has never happened before.

Someone will need to have the computer scanned for trouble codes to proceed with troubleshooting the problem.
As long as the check engine light is on some of the sensors and components may be bypassed.
Its possible you pumped some dirt or contamination from the bottom of the tank into the injectors.

My 2004 3.5 L engine has been doing this off and on. It is showing 2 EVAC codes. I am pretty sure its the purge valve. My plugs and other things are fine. I have a 160,000 miles on my car and have had very few problems with it. I recently dropped the gas tank to make sure there wasnt crud in the tank or on if the two fuel filters were clogged. The tank was fine. I did find that the gas tank on my car is not one of the tanks were the lining will come off and get stuck in the filter so good to know. The few times my car has decided not to idel is after I stopped for gas but after reving it a bit I have gotten it to idle and then be fine for awhile. Next step in my book is to replace the purge valve since there is no blockage or vacuum leak

This happened to mine last year. Looked it up online & told my mechanic to replace the purge control valve. Think it might have been around 100 bucks installed. It worked!

If you live in the US, take it to qany Auto Zone store and thy will read the codes off for you, I would suspect any right thinking competitor would do the same, check if you don't have one near by.

SOURCE: Engine light is blinking and it runs very rough/low power in gear.

Check the coil pack. Same symptoms on mine. It went at 74,000.
You can get the resistance specs from a shop manual. I have been told the plastic engine cover traps heat and makes short life of the coil pack. I removed the top engin cover, cosmetic only after replacing mine. You will probably need spark plugs also they are probably fowled by now. If you have not changed spark plug wires in awhile in would not hurt.

This issue is caused by a fault in the evap. emmision system. In the engine compartment there is a purge valve that takes in engine vaccum and fuel vapours. The valve is malfunctioning. It is located on the right side of the intake planum.

The majority of time this happens due to valve need replacement and perhaps a cylinder head if the valve guides are cracked. Some just need a new timing belt (and balance shaft belt).

The belt has stretched causing the belt to jump timing. When you have a belt to jump a gear or pulley it causes more force on the teeth, breaking them off. --------------------] Do NOT turn the sprocket at the top of the timing belt...this is your camshaft sprocket. If you turn the camshaft sprocket, you will make the belt jump timing on the crankshaft sprocket. After you replace your timing belt, you can have the mechanic do a cold cylinder compression check to see if you have a bent valve. He can also pull the valve cover, and observe the valve train for any sticking valves. The valves collide with the pistons when this happens If you have any sticking or bent valves or low cylinder compression, your minimum repair is an upper engine rebuild.---------------- ------------- Also check the crank position sensor.If its broken then timing belt teeth will get caught there and it will break every-time the timing belt spins through crank shaft position sensor. -------------- this should help.Thanks.Helpmech.

the only way you are going to find the answer to this is to take your vehicle to a retail auto parts store and ask them to hook up a scanner to your OBDII port to read for fault codes-write the codes down and come back on here for answers to your problem(s)-this is done for free at virtually all chain store.

I have the same issue with my 2003 Sante Fe. After I fill up, (whether it's 1/2 a tank or 1/4), my car will stall unless I pump the gas for about 60 sec. My Sante Fe has around 104,000 miles- it also only gets 13 miles to the gallon. I also had an issue with the check engine light. I had 4 different garages check it and all 4 told me they didn't know why it was on (has beem on since 2005). I recently replaced the battery and it went off. Ever since I've had the problem filling up.

I have a book for the Sante Fe, and that code is not in it. I would go back to them and have them re-run it. The person may have just misread the screen.
