1996 Jetta Trek 5spd dies

I have had this car die on me twice. both times it had just rained and my car drove through a large puddle, thats the only thing unusal that i did that day.  well the first time i am on my way home and i make it about 5 miles then the car just gives out and died on me. the mechanic said he found nothing wrong when it arrived. so i take it home and 9 days later i have the same issue, but it did not even make it half a mile. it "conviniently" died in the center of an intersection. Thank goodness somebody helped me push it out of the way. and same thing with the mechanic. what could cause it to fail like this??

The same thing with my jetta, it was the coil, its up on the fire wall, probly has some fine cracks in it, and the moisture grounds it out. when its dry out its fine, but get it wet and out she goes. You can check it by starting your car, open the hood and splash the coil with water, if the car cuts out, its the coil.

Please replace your distributer cap and rotor and possibly the wires water is a great conducter of electricity so if your secondary ignition seeps through your wires or cap this will short out your spark and cause a no start problem. hope this helps.!

The Problem is the Distributor Cap and Ignition System. If you get water on these Components it will Instantly Kill the Motor. It will start back after these Dry out But, This will not Remedy the Problem. Your Mechanic needs to check the Ignition System and the Plugs and Wires and see if there is not a Crack somewhere that is allowing Moisture to Enter the System. Locate this Leak and this Problem is Gone. Please Rate my Response, I need all the Help That I can Get! Thanks!

Sounds like while on your trek about, you may have bought fuel and it most likely had a large amount of water in the tank. I think you have water in you tank. How many miles do you have on this vehicle?Did your vehicle at any time on your trip get hot, in the red? One drop of water on a fuel filter will almost make it impermeable to its ability to pass fuel through it.There are many more unanswered questions that I have for you. mike micmor68@gmail.com

You either have bad plug wires or water got in the intake like billie said and is playing havic on your mass air flow sesor. Test the plug wires by squirting some water on them when the car is running (we are looking for like a spray bottle squirt not to much).
If nothing changes ( you will be able to tell the car will wana die or you will see them grounding out a bit) then you can try cleaning the mas, or just replacing it.
Also check your air filter while your in there as well might need to be replaced now :)

Good luck

Check your vacuum lines, make sure there is no leaks, and go from there, then all you electrical connection in the engine compartment.
I have a 1996 Jetta Trek Edition, the hoses, and wire harness, are so brittle, any movement can cause hoses and wire insulation to crack.

1996 Jeep Cherokee Died

Likely you got lots of water in the alternator. find a way to dry it out (compressed air usually works). Then try again. Water can damage alt permanently so you may need to have it tested (on a machine, out of car). Make sure you dry everything else as well water in any system can really mess things up!!!

We had an intermittent dieing problem. Worse when the weather was worse. The coil was cracked and shorting itself out intermittently on a rivet.
