Question about 2002 Ford Escape
Anybody have the skinny on updating the PCM software on this vehicle? How can I find if it's available, what it does & how the heck do I get it if it is? I've called around to some FORD dealers, but either they don't kow their a** from a hole in the ground, or they want to diag it for $85 +/- an hour to see if one is available, then... if it is.... charge to get it done. Anyway to find our without the expense of the diagnostics.. just to find out if it's available? Thanks for the assist.
All a dealer has to do is put a scan tool on your vehicle & look at
Mode #09 Data I believe it is & then check their Ford Systems
in house computer to see if you have the latest updates
They are jerking you for sure
They have 100 years experience doing that.
To do any updates you need a subscription from ford for
a day, week, month, whatever you want to pay for, as a repair
shop with the J2534 Pass Thru Module for their scan tool
can do it.
That is unless you want to pay a dealer hundreds for a $200
Why would you be addressing updates unless some type of
OBD2 Code indicated some need for something other than
as built off the assy line.
If you start throwing new modules at it for no reason, then your
Your going to have to get used to the fact shops have a large
investment in test equip & a $100 to look at your vehicle is nothing
Yes you have to pay for that & the solution or fix if necessary, each
& every time, with all your veh & at least once or twice a year, that
is the technology were given by the ferderal govt in an effort to do a
poor job of cleaning up the atmosphere

SOURCE: PCM module 2003 ford escape
pcm is under the console under the dash not the one between the seats. It's also called a gem module. Replaced ours to fix sporatic no start problem but didn't.

It sounds like the fuel is not being delivered sufficently to the engine. Try looking here. Perhaps a fuel injecter cleaner (you can pour Seafoam into the gas tank and it is a great fuel injecter cleaner and fuel stabilizer). What did your plugs look like when you replaced them? This can tell you a lot about the combustion chamber. A Haynes manual will be invaluable to you.

This is worth checking
Common fault on FORD
Usually due to a poor connection in the YELLOW PLASTIC CONNECTOR underneath the passenger seat.
Just push it together properly and it should clear the AirBag fault

If the cruise lamp comes on and the cruise does not set i would advise inspecting the cruise cable and make certain it is not broken, if ok the the servo has likely failed.
