Question about 2002 Ford Escape

2002 Escape XLS 3.0L 4x4 PCM software "update"?

Anybody have the skinny on updating the PCM software on this vehicle? How can I find if it's available, what it does & how the heck do I get it if it is? I've called around to some FORD dealers, but either they don't kow their a** from a hole in the ground, or they want to diag it for $85 +/- an hour to see if one is available, then... if it is.... charge to get it done. Anyway to find our without the expense of the diagnostics.. just to find out if it's available? Thanks for the assist.

All a dealer has to do is put a scan tool on your vehicle & look at
Mode #09 Data I believe it is & then check their Ford Systems
in house computer to see if you have the latest updates

They are jerking you for sure
They have 100 years experience doing that.

To do any updates you need a subscription from ford for
a day, week, month, whatever you want to pay for, as a repair
shop with the J2534 Pass Thru Module for their scan tool
can do it.

That is unless you want to pay a dealer hundreds for a $200

Why would you be addressing updates unless some type of
OBD2 Code indicated some need for something other than
as built off the assy line.

If you start throwing new modules at it for no reason, then your
in trouble.

Your going to have to get used to the fact shops have a large
investment in test equip & a $100 to look at your vehicle is nothing

Yes you have to pay for that & the solution or fix if necessary, each
& every time, with all your veh & at least once or twice a year, that
is the technology were given by the ferderal govt in an effort to do a
poor job of cleaning up the atmosphere

Thank you Peter. You ask, "Why would you be addressing updates....?" If you remember my other question on here, I've pretty much installed a whole NEW exhaust system... 3 CATs (fried the new Firewall side one adn replaced it with another NEW one), Flexpipe, muffler, tailpipe (after frying the one), and replaced the IAC, EGR and DPFE... oh.... and a Tune-up (6 spark plugs & a plenum gasket) in 6 months of buying this car. I'm worried about frying ANOTHER Firewall side CAT again. When I tried to return the burned CAT (under warranty), I was denied because "The photos revealed an extremely overheated converter. This type of overheating has been caused by an issue upstream of the converter. Please note that that there could be a PCM (computer) update for your vehicle....". I've pretty much replaced most of what could cause it, next would be O2 sensors, but I don't think that's the issue here. Since the IDIOTS that replaced the CATs never dropped the muffler to check if it had been compromised with some debris when the Firewall side CAT had first melted and clogged the Rear one, some particles could have washed through the system and lodged in the muffler, restricting it's exhaust flow. On THAT hunch, I had the muffler, resonator and tailpipe dropped and checked at Meineke, and they DID find stuff in the muffler. I had the system from the Rear CAT all the way back replaced, minus the resonator (apparently the resonator is not required). Anyway, that is why I asked about the PCM update. Like computers, software is always being updated/upgraded, so perhaps, like your computer, the PCM (computer) has an update for its software also.

It sounds like the fuel is not being delivered sufficently to the engine. Try looking here. Perhaps a fuel injecter cleaner (you can pour Seafoam into the gas tank and it is a great fuel injecter cleaner and fuel stabilizer). What did your plugs look like when you replaced them? This can tell you a lot about the combustion chamber. A Haynes manual will be invaluable to you.

If the cruise lamp comes on and the cruise does not set i would advise inspecting the cruise cable and make certain it is not broken, if ok the the servo has likely failed.

An internal computer problem. Read only memory. This is the factory defaults. These can't be erased by a tech. But can be by a system fault. You can get the computer online for about $160. Plug and play. Dealers 2 to 3 times this.

05 Ford Escape, coils #3 & #4 not firing. We've replaced the battery, spark plugs, alternator, coil packs, & pcm. Had pcm reflashed. Garage said it had to be coil packs, but just replaced coil packs 3

Check engine light on ? Code's ? What engine ? 2.3 l 4cylinder or 3.ol v-6 This vehicle has coil on plug ignition system , not coil packs ! a coil per cylinder . If new coils an still has no spark , has no B+ voltage to the coil or the PCM isn't controlling them . Without testing i'd only be guessing as to the problem .If the repair shop you had it to can only say it had to be the coils , I'd find another shop to take it to !

ACTION: Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.
  1. If the concern is a 2001-2005 Escape with idle speeds outside the specified range:
    1. Install a new idle air control (IAC) valve with jumper harness included in the kit. The new Denso brand IAC will be installed with the electrical connector facing the opposite direction of the original (Hitachi) valve which is why the jumper harness is required. The original (Hitachi) IAC connector faces the front of the vehicle while the new Denso IAC connector faces toward the rear of the vehicle.
    2. Referring to the calibration charts (Figures 1 and 2), select the applicable file and reprogram the powertrain control module (PCM) using the TSB Service Procedure and WDS/IDS release B40.5 and higher. Calibration files may also be obtained at
  2. If the concern is a 2001 - 2003 Escape with transaxle shudder, drain, flush and refill the transmission fluid with MERCON® Multi-Purpose Automatic Transmission Fluid. Then, referring to the calibration charts (Figures 1 and 2), select the applicable file and reprogram the PCM using the TSB Service Procedure and WDS/IDS release B40.5 and higher. Calibration files may also be obtained at
  3. When reprogramming the PCM use blank path programming. Select the proper file from the chart and manually enter the PCM part number or tear tag number to obtain the updated calibration file.
To Perform Blank Path Programming:
  1. Connect WDS/IDS to vehicle.
  2. Select "16 pin", select "All others, except those below", press TICK.
  3. Screen shows installation of cable, press TICK.
  4. Screen shows to turn ignition ON. DO NOT TURN IGNITION ON. Press TICK.
  5. Screen shows progress bar, then screen tells you "No communication can be established with the PCM" and asks you if you want to retry? Select "NO". With the ignition key still OFF, press TICK.
  6. Screen shows to turn ignition ON. Keep ignition in the "OFF" position, press TICK and you will be asked to cycle the key "ON" and "OFF" a few times. Please keep the key position in the "OFF" position through the key cycles.
  7. Screen will show "The diagnostic tester is unable to communicate with this vehicle." You will be prompted to "select a vehicle from the vehicle list", press TICK.
  8. A list of vehicles will be displayed, select ALL OTHERS, and press TICK.
  9. Screen shows "To enable WDS to reprogram the PCM with the correct calibration", enter one of the following: Vehicle Calibration number (7 digits), Tear Tag number (4 digits), or PCM part number, press TICK.
  10. Highlight the box next to the selection chosen, and enter ONLY ONE of the selections listed above. Press TICK.

Was driving and all of a sudden the engine turned off and every light imaginable in my 2004 Mercury Mountaineer turned on. I coaxed to a parking lot and it won't start but all the power is still on in...

You do not need to go to any dealer ever, with any vehicle

You do however, have to find a repair shop that knows what
they are doing

Your taking about flashing updates into a different PCM
Again don't need a dealer, you need a shop with the scan
tool module for that & they have to pay for a licence from
ford to download the updates

I would say your vehicle hasn't been properly diagnosed
& has had even more problems put into it.

Can not even guess at the issues without the truck

PCM's don't fail often, put the old one back & go
to a different shop. One that has been in the same family
for 30 years
