Question about Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

I was unable to shift gears in my F150 This happened over night. I subsequently took it to a transmission shop to have it repaired, they replaced the slave cylinder, clutch set and turned the fly wheel. This solved that problem BUT since leaving the shop I discovered that the truck would not hold speed going up hill, regardless of being in 2nd, 3rd, or 4th gears. The engine would suddenly drop 1000 or 2000 rpms then after down shifting It would gradually speed up then repeat the issue all over again. Could this have something to do with the vehicle speed sensor? or something the mechanic failed to re connect or install correctly?

Most likely.. some garages do sloppy work in a hurry for a high turnover of need to check all the wiring at that shop..make the mechanic show you what he did by pointing it out if the repair was just recently.. make sure all the under-truck harness is connected and all hoses as well.. make them take you in the shop with the truck raised up and show this stuff to you..dont take no for an answer after all YOU PAID FOR IT!!!! good may be an inconvienience but so is the resulting issues...good luck...

hi if its just second to thrid then the clutch is slipping on thrid gear look at the boxes oil level is important but look at the colour is it red and tranperant as this is ok if its brown its a sign of the clutches slipping i would try a stall test on thrid gear first and if its ok second gear [manually] see is the engine stalls at the correct rpm if you thinkabout it imagine you are in thrid gear in a manuual box and suddenly drop into second it would be hard shifting it could also be a faulty thrid gear solenoid yates210456

It can be the programming for the Electric shifting transmission or the 3rd gear Solenoid is acting up. On some models you will see 3 identical "Caps" on the side of the transmission. These are the ends of the Solenoids. If you can find the wire connectors to these devices you may be able to uncouple the connector and check the internal pins for corrosion. Clean off the corrosion and you might have a chance of restoring the action.

A really good transmission shop may be able to replace a Solenoid without pulling the trans. The main problem with removal of this part is the plunger end is holding the friction band in place for that gear. The band must be held in place while the part is switched and it takes a skilled Mechanic to do it. After the repair the band may require adjustment which is done by moving a adjustment stud on the opposite side of the trans from the Solenoids.

This may sound crazy to you. Check the fuse that controls the speedometer, cruise control and interior dome light. My 93 f150 battery was going dead every night. One morning I noticed the dome light inside was still on. I couldn't get it to go off so I pulled the fuse that is under the dash on the driver side. Light went out and so did speedometer. When I drove it later that day it wouldn't shift from low until I let off the gas. Then it would shift around between gears for no apparent reason. It took me a day of two to put 2 and 2 together. When I put the fuse back in, the speedometer started working and it started shifting normally. I finally took the bulb out of the dome light and now all is well.On the 93 f150 the speedometer is electronically linked to the transmission shifting points. You may have other fuses that are linked to your transmission.

It wont shift to the last gear

Sounds right Aamco is a good shop and they know transmission. Your Explorer transmission is a AODE this a electronic controlled transmission. I would be up set that who ever replaced the transmission before may have damaged the wiring to the transmission. Did you get a war. with the first repair.

Instrument panel does not reflect gear shift

You need a shift position switch. Its located on the drivers side of transmission where the shift rod hooks to transmission.
