Question about 1999 Lincoln Continental
Runs good but as soon as I put it in gear the engine kills
Possible bad switch on the transmission or
some type of adjustment to linkage or cable
to compensate for a worn switch

yes...they do program the computers to come on or give a "service engine soon" light so that you will bring them back into the dealership....if you have access to an obd2 diag tool you can reset the codes yourself

check out these things EGR valve- Ignition timing- Vaccum leaks damaged valve springs or sticking valve- Vaccum leak at the intake manifold try this website to see if they have your car listed its www.alladatadiy.com if not check out your local library to get your hands on a Haynes repair manual for a Lincoln Town Car i hope i have been some help to you Michigan Man.

The car will break up around 4000 rpm. This is normal for the conti and I owned 2 1998 models. If there is no laod (transmission not engaged) the rpm will break up so you dont over rev the engine. I consider myself an experts with all the work i have done on mine so relax, drink a beer and enjoy!

check the fluid level and for a clogged filter in the trans. Is it making a buzzing noise like it's sucking air?
Not a sensor or solenoid problem.
