Question about 2005 Volvo S40 T5

Open Question

Key stuck in ignition, no electrical power. I have a 2005 Volvo S40. When I put the key in the ignition I was able to turn it past 0, but upon doing that all power was lost and I was unable to return the key back to the 0 position and the automatic shifter locked in the park position. I have tried moving the steering wheel to all positions and also tried to jump start the vehicle. I am at a loss for what to do and there is no local dealership for me to consult with.

SOURCE: 1998 Volvo V70 ignition switch turn 360 degrees

This is the problem with the ignition switch.
The lock cylinder into which the key is inserted, and the electronic switch that sits just behind the lock cylinder are not in proper alignment with each other.
Probably before you plan to replace the switch you can take the switch of and put it back in, many a times that will fix the alignment issue.

Thanks
Kevin

Your ignition needs replaced. They weren't the best on Volvos; especially if there is a lot of weight on your keychain.

2005 Volvo S40 with key stuck in ignition. It turns off but key doesn't come, out of the steering wheel. Please advise needed, if lock change is required estimated cost of part and labour please.

Some ignition system locks will not release the key unless you push in towards the column while turning further off. It is a safety device to stop in advertent removal of the key while moving. Try that first.

Key stuck in ignition

it sometimes happens. has it ever happened before/
1. do you have a button on the steering column to release the key? some do, down from the key.
2. try to move the steering wheel right and left; there is a wheel lock in the column; to get it out.
3. if all else fails, you need to replace the lock. sorry

What is solution for key error msg on 2004 s40?

The system should be scanned with Volvos' Vida. However, the most common problem is usually the antenna ring that is mounted around the ignition lock (where you put the key in). You should also try another key if you have one. Sometimes the key can be the problem

thats because your regular key probably has an electic connection to the car so go to your volvo dealer and they should be able to clear anything up or replace it with a key that will work

Key stuck in ignition

Hi I am vortash I had this once and it was the same vehicle I cut a thin piece of plastic from an old credit card just slightly thinner than the key and applied some superglue to it onl a very tiny amount in the middle of the plastic I applied it with a pin so not to put too much on .. I then eased it into the keyhole next to the key waited 5 minutes for the glue to dry and managed to gently pull it out but if you dont fancy that idea I have also seen it done by drilling a vey small hole in the top of the broken Key with a Dremel and a fine drill bit and a small allen key with loctite on it pushed and tapped into the hole .. that worked also .. hope this helps Regards Vortash
