There should be a switch in the rear latch assembly. This is under the panel inside the rear hatch. Unplug it & the lights should go out. The switch is available from the dealer. I replaced one in a newer model Grand cherokee with the same problem.

Check the sensors and clean them with steel wool. the hatch may not be close to each other so check that as well you may have to loosen them up and tighten them again but try that first

Hi there, maybe check the hatch switch and replace it if faulty. Or you could bridge the wires and that will tell the system it is closed .

I would like to know how to replace the entire hatch on a 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo

when you lift the hatch open up by the roof there are two hinges with three bolts to each hinge thats where it comes off depending on if its power you will need to unplug the harness and that is ran under the head liner not much involved in changing a rear hatch good luck

Back hatch shuts but interior lights stay on

Check the interior light switch ... there may be a setting for the "on" position or the swtich on the rear hatch is dirty and or malfuntioning. Could also be a short in the wiring.

Creepy flashing lights

Check the adjustment of the rear hatch. As you turn the car body flexes and if the rear hatch is not adjusted correctly the interior lights will come on.
As for the sunroof, without proper diagnose I can only guess (motor, relay, fuse ).
