Hi Snich69,

First off, Safety. My Wrangler doesn't have an Airbag. If your's doesn't either, skip to the numbers. But....
Click here if yours does. This link provides precautions to take when working with or near airbags. Please read it and take it seriously.

The procedure:

  1. Turn your wheels so they are straight ahead.
  2. Pop the hood
  3. Remove the negative battery terminal.
  4. Find where the column comes through the fire wall beneath the brake master cylinder
  5. Mark the upper knuckle of the intermediary steering shaft and lower end of the steering column with white paint or a sharpie. Something indelible so it won't rub off. This is to line it up later.
  6. Remove the pinch bolt on the upper knuckle
  7. Now we go inside the car
  8. Unscrew and remove the lower dash panels
  9. Pull up the rug to expose the column base plate. Some plates are a single piece with three nuts. Mine is a double (upper and lower) with five. Take them all off.
  10. While you're down there, pull the plugin electrical connectors attached to the column
  11. You may have noticed that there are two bolts keeping the column from dropping on to your head. Be aware of that as you remove them.
  12. Now that the column is loose, sit in the drivers seat, grip the wheel and pull it towards you until the column releases from the knuckle you loosened under the hood.
That ought to do it,
Good luck and thanks for using FixYa

Mike

    Hey there Snich,

Thanks for taking the time to rate, but I have a Question. Why only the Helpful rating?

As volunteers, providing time and expertise, the only compensation we get is the pride we take in keeping high ratings. For Experts with a rating over 90%, any vote other than a FixYa lowers that rating.

I provided you the exact procedure for pulling the steering. Plus a little extra to keep you safe. That deserves a Fixya.

I don't know what more you could want, but your rating me helpful lowers my overall rating, ranking and is not helpful to me. It would've been better if you didn't rate at all as that has no effect on the score.

You will find it behind the stearing colum. You can get to it by taking out 2 screws to the stearing colum. They will be right there when you get the cover off.

I have a 84 Chevy Celebrity stationwagon and the turn signal quit flashing but still comes on, Is there more than one relay under the dash for this. I already replaced the one I found and no change.

it could be the flashing signal switch, the electrical wires in the stearing colum sometime brake, try that. hope it helps you. in order to remove it you need to take cover of stearing colum and usually one plug and two bolts hold it in place. good luck

apparently steering colum lock. next time try turning your steering wheel to the left while turning the key in the ignition. don't stress the ignition. though if it isn't your stearing lock the last thing you want to do is bust up the or in come cases break your key off in there. Try turning the stearing wheel though. 99% of the time thats what it is.
