Question about 2003 Chevrolet Malibu
My car will not start at all, I turn the igniton key and the only thing that turns on is the lights from the dashboard, however my car will not start, When I use to turn on my car I would have to press the break then turn the key ignition and then my car will start, but just recently my car starting smoking from all the vents, I thought my car was going to catch on fire, but then after that happened my car would start when it wanted too, I will turn the key ignotion and leave it on for 10mins and then off for 1 min then my car will start, but now nothing, I have took it to mechanics and electrocians and what they are saying is the kill switch and i will have to take it to the dealer because is a factory kill switch, Can anybody help me and tell me of there is any other altenative then going to the dealer ship and spend over $600 for a lil piece. PLEASE HELP!
Nevr take it to a dealer--their equipment goes only 5yrs bac and help is not experienced--go to independent with reputation----car needs pro inspection-has worn parts and bad maintenance--their are repair books in library or online--------go to magicmechanic and send him problem-hes expert on any model n yr

Try under the dash, attached to colum is a switch that the rod goes into from your ignition key switch, that may need to be adjusted tword your steering wheel just a touch, they go out of alignmnet from time to time

Sounds like an antitheft problem I would start with the antitheft system. Usually when you only have one key all keys have to be programmed together even the original. When you have more than one it is easy to program additional keys.

under the steering column, there are three or four little holes in the plastic covering. If you look inside, one of them (the one on the right side toward the dash) there is a brass pin inside. This is the pin to release the key. As far as the key not turning, I have had the same problem. The first time I replaced the ignition switch and that solved the problem. However, this makes no sense because the ignition switch has nothing to do with the tumbler being locked. GMC thinks that my anti theft system, which is inside the ignition cylinder is the problem. By removing the ignition switch, it reset the pass lock anti-theft system and temporarily fixed the problem. So, try removing the ignition switch and then plugging it back in. If that doesn't work, your in the same boat as I am, and we may both need new ignition cylinders.

I have worked on several vehicles with this same problem and each one was a relatively simple repair with no parts involved, first off the shift interlock has nothing to do with it and will not prevent your vehicle from going into park, it is designed to work ONLY when coming out of park. The problem your having depends on the type of shifter handle your vehicle has, if the release lever is on the bottom and you have to push up with your fingers to release it, then the problem is...there is a rubber type cover that surrounds the release button, after time it becomes distorted and bunches up preventing the shifter from fully engaging in the park position (even though it appears the vehicle is going into park)if your careful you can work the rubber cover out and your problem is fixed. If your shifter button is on the side and pressed with your thumb the cable needs to be adjusted, this cables only purpose is to prevent key removal except when in park and is easily adjusted, with the center council removed, if you look at the front of the shifter base you will see 2 cables that snap into the shifter frame, the larger one is the gear selector cable, the smaller one runs up to the steering column and operates the mechanism that prevents key removal, where the cable snaps into the shifter frame is where the adjustment is done and is identical to a kick-down cable used on older vehicles with automatic transmissions, right where it snaps into the frame there will be a button you can press down releasing a spring loaded adjustment arm, make sure you first mark the arm for reference then press down the button and adjust it a little either way until it functions properly, hope this helps and good luck

Is the theftlock light lit up on the dash? It it is you may have a problem with the GM manufacturer theftlock device. The Theftlock system prevents the vehicle from being started without its own key and shuts of the fuel injectors which is typically why it turns over but won't start. It's quite problematic on mine and locks the car so you have to replace the cylinder.
If the "Theft System" light is flashing on in the dash sit in the car with the key in the "On" position. When the light stops flashing it will light solid for a second then go out. Open and close the driver side door, turn the car off, turn and start the car. This resets the theft lock and I kid you not it works.
