SOURCE: I put a starer and she still wont start all i get is a 'click' sound

Step 1:

First check the starter relay fuse. Replace it even if the fuse looks good.

Step 2:

If you are sure the fuse is not the problem then ensure that the battery if fully charged and is working properly. Turn on the interior light then turn on the headlights. The interior light should dim momentarily then go bright again. If it stays dim check and charge the battery.

Step 3:

If the battery is not the problem, check if the battery is grounded properly. The ground wire is connected to the negative terminal of the battery. Make sure it has a good connection to the engine block, i.e. there must be no rust, no paint and it must be fastened tightly. Also ensure that all heavy connections are tight and secure, as any looseness will cause the clicking sound.

Step 4:

If it still does not start, jump the starter's two heavy solenoid terminals with a screwdriver. FOR YOUR SAFETY THE CAR MUST BE IN NEUTRAL OR PARK WHEN YOU DO THIS because the starter should jump and turn now! The ground is the problem if it turns.

Step 5:

If it still only clicks the solenoid may be faulty. Replace this if you did not get a new solenoid with the starter.

Step 6:

If the solenoid is new then check the neutral safety switch located on the transmission. To find the switch follow the cable from the shifter to the transmission. A faulty switch will prevent the engine from starting.

Step 7:

If all these steps fail you will have to ask a professional to resolve this problem because specialized equipment will be required for perform further diagnostic tests.

Car won't start unless jumped off. Can the fuseable link on the postive cable prevent the car from starting?

Difficult to say. If you are connecting the jumper cables to the battery posts, the only thing you are doing is boosting the voltage in the battery.
A mechanic would check for voltage at the battery and the starter to check the cables.

If the problem is no crank, could be the security system, key switch, neutral safety switch, starter, cables, or battery.
I would check for power at the starer and work back.
Did you try it in neutral ?

Replaced starer, solenoid and the postive cable but the van tries to start when i conect the negative cble whatis the problem?

During your replacement you have somehow connected the hot wire on the solenoid and the hot wire from the battery. It could be something as a wire turned slightly the wrong way on the starter and touching the battery positive.. Relook at this and you should be able to solve the problem.

Be very careful and make sure that the vehicle is not in gear.. Best of Luck..

My 1966 lincoln wont start, have replaced solonoid ,battery , tried to jump it , still nothing. just "clicks" when key is turned. why?

Have you checked the polarity in the postive or negtive battrey cables. It sounds as if you are not getting a clean contact. Check them throughly it must be in that area.

When trying to start the car i hear clicking from starer but car does not star. but if i keep trying a few times it well turn over and start. btw the stater was replaced around feb,2010

Sounds like an intermittent Earth connection. Check all the battery earth leads where they connect to the Battery, Engine and Body. If possible, disconnect, clean and reconnect.

Won't start when engine is warmed

the problem is likely the starter when they get old heat can cause them to malfunction.

key off and out, diconnect negitive side of battrey then postive.clean terimals, charge battrey, connect postive cable (with key off)connect negitive.and start.
your dead battrey is taking up a big load on system,so when you boost it the dead battrey is taking it all the starter is geeting vey little.thats the clicking.
if you dont have a charger dicconect both terminals the same way again, put the jumper cables on the dead battrey.let it charge battrey for 10 15 mins .the longer the better.remover jumpers.
with key off and out conected battrey terminals.connect jumper cables and start.
let me know if it start or not hopefully the key hasnt lost its coding.
