Question about 1998 Jeep Cherokee

Identify a fuse labeled MUX/T TOW, 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Battery went dead, traced a drain to this fuse. Don't know what is on this circuit. Seems to be connected with dashboard gauges. How do we stop the drain on the battery? Thanks!

The basic problem is there is a drain on the battery, that when left, runs it down. How do we eliminate the drain? It only took 1 1/2 days for the brand new battery to go dead. We need to stop what's causing the drain which appears to be this mux/t tow fuse. This was determined by doing an amp draw test, which shows a 200 ma draw.

The fuse is located in the power distribution box under the hood. It's a 50 amp MAXI fuse, mux/t tow.

That is the multiplexer.

A multiplexer is a device that gets many input, and returns a single output to control module.

When this part is defective, you can have erratic behaviour , and the battery draining very fast.

It probably is the best idea to remove the battery and keep it indoors on trickle charge if your not using the car for a while,it will keep the battery much happier. As to the car,it will not harm it sitting there with no battery, the clock wont work obviously! and if you have a radio with preset channels/memory,you will have to reset them when you instal the battery, also if it has an anti theft code you will need to reset that, but most modern radios dont have that anymore as car security is so much better these days.I must stress though that you should top the battery up and charge it fully after you have taken it out, then charge it once a month,or it will die.You can get an Automatic charger that will keep it automatically fully charged and can be left connected 24/7 with little observation.
his can be caused by a weak or bad regulator switch.

Check for hidden accessory light on (glove box, stop light, etc.)
Could be a bad voltage regulator contacts staying closed after engine shut down
Disconnect battery cable and instal a test light between cable and battery
Light will illuminate if there is current flow
Pull each fuse one at a time until light goes out to determine which circuit is involved

Welcome to Fixya! I did a little Research on this after your First Post. It seems that this Fuse is Directly associated with the Tow Package under the Jeep in the Back. I found a Response that said that he had Cleaned the Contacts back there where the Wiring harness Connects to the Trailer Lighting and it Helped a Lot. You could try this and see where it gets you. Problem is, I could not locate a Response to it in addition to let us Know if it Actually Fixed the Problem But, This is more than you have Right now. Let me know!

The mux part of that is short for multiplexer
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiplexer

but suggestions from what i've read were that that was for the overseas model....

I saw your question all over the net ..i think that is you... check the wiring harness for trailer to see if there is a short in it... it should blow the fuse but if it's a slight short in the wiring it's probably not drawing enough to blow a 50amp fuse

I would locate the relay for that circuit as well... it is likely stuck on.

How to find electrical short if not started in about 2 days battery is drand dead. replaced battery with new one.

The best test for this is.... Well before starting this test make sure your doors are closed and everything is off. Then ...Take (disconnect) one end of the battery cable, the Positive or negative it don't mater witch one. Put a 12 volt test light between the two disconnected (cable and battery end)...now if the light is lit, then you have a voltage drain somewhere...to find out were it is you will have too start to remove your fuses one at a time until your test light goes off...for example: if you pulled your cigaret lighter fuse and the light went off then you know there is a problem with that circuit...ect......

This sounds a little confusing but it is fairly easy..i sure hope this helps you out..Good Luck

Something keeps DRAINING the battery?

If you disconnect the negative battery cable and connect a 12V test light between the battery negative post and the negative battery cable terminal the light will burn if there's a draw. Make sure all electrical consumers are off and all doors closed when doing this draw test. If the light is on start pulling 1 fuse at a time until the light goes out, when it goes out that's the circuit that has the draw. Trace it from there.

Have you tried to pull one fuse at a time to see if you can find it that way. From your post I am going to assume that your are using a test light or meter between the battery term and disconected cable. If not try that as you pull the fuses and narrow down the draw. Don't forget to pull the light bulb from under the hood and make sure that the dome light and all other asscessories are turned off.

Where is the fuse for the tail lights for jeep '96 grand cherokee

Unfortunately, could not find owners manual for 1996.

Website only has models 2004-current
=> http://www.jeep.com/en/owners/manuals/index.html

There are two fuse boxes. One under driver compartment usually left to the steering colum. A label is stamp to identify each fuse. I would look at Park Lights and Instrument Cluster fuses. The easy way is to take a flashlight and look at all fuses. If they are all okay. Then just remove the Park Lights and Instrument Cluster fuse and reseat them. The other fuse box is under the hood and near the batter. It also has a label to identify each fuse.

95 Jeep grand cherokee dead battery everyday

You need to check the battery drain. Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery and using a multimeter between the negative terminal of the battery and the now disconnected negative lead check the amperage which is being drawn from the battery. Your reading should settle anything between 0.03 and 0.20A but hopefully nearer the lower end. If it is above this then you will have to systematicly disconnect each electricrical item until you have a good reading. Once you have get a good reading on the multimeter you should be able have a good idea of what was causing the drain. Good luck
