Question about 1998 Jeep Cherokee

Identify a fuse labeled MUX/T TOW, 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Battery went dead, traced a drain to this fuse. Don't know what is on this circuit. Seems to be connected with dashboard gauges. How do we stop the drain on the battery? Thanks!

The basic problem is there is a drain on the battery, that when left, runs it down. How do we eliminate the drain? It only took 1 1/2 days for the brand new battery to go dead. We need to stop what's causing the drain which appears to be this mux/t tow fuse. This was determined by doing an amp draw test, which shows a 200 ma draw.

The fuse is located in the power distribution box under the hood. It's a 50 amp MAXI fuse, mux/t tow.

That is the multiplexer.

A multiplexer is a device that gets many input, and returns a single output to control module.

When this part is defective, you can have erratic behaviour , and the battery draining very fast.

It probably is the best idea to remove the battery and keep it indoors on trickle charge if your not using the car for a while,it will keep the battery much happier. As to the car,it will not harm it sitting there with no battery, the clock wont work obviously! and if you have a radio with preset channels/memory,you will have to reset them when you instal the battery, also if it has an anti theft code you will need to reset that, but most modern radios dont have that anymore as car security is so much better these days.I must stress though that you should top the battery up and charge it fully after you have taken it out, then charge it once a month,or it will die.You can get an Automatic charger that will keep it automatically fully charged and can be left connected 24/7 with little observation.
his can be caused by a weak or bad regulator switch.

Check for hidden accessory light on (glove box, stop light, etc.)
Could be a bad voltage regulator contacts staying closed after engine shut down
Disconnect battery cable and instal a test light between cable and battery
Light will illuminate if there is current flow
Pull each fuse one at a time until light goes out to determine which circuit is involved

Welcome to Fixya! I did a little Research on this after your First Post. It seems that this Fuse is Directly associated with the Tow Package under the Jeep in the Back. I found a Response that said that he had Cleaned the Contacts back there where the Wiring harness Connects to the Trailer Lighting and it Helped a Lot. You could try this and see where it gets you. Problem is, I could not locate a Response to it in addition to let us Know if it Actually Fixed the Problem But, This is more than you have Right now. Let me know!

I saw your question all over the net ..i think that is you... check the wiring harness for trailer to see if there is a short in it... it should blow the fuse but if it's a slight short in the wiring it's probably not drawing enough to blow a 50amp fuse

I would locate the relay for that circuit as well... it is likely stuck on.

My transit van on a53 plate, is draining the battery, I have had new alternator, and battery but it is still draining battery,

Battery drains are always fun. Generally it means that something you either hooked up recently to a direct hot wire is draining the battery or there has been a wire that got hot enough to melt another wore on the system and cause a full time connection. Other than taking it to the dealer and letting them put a breakout box on your system to isolate the problem, you could put a volt meter on your battery, if there is truly a drain on the system you will see the volts slowly drop, then open your fuse box and one by one start pulling fuses until you find the one that's pulling on the battery, (you'll know this when the volts on the meter stop dropping). When you find the fuse that's pulling the volts down, you'll then be able to start tracing the circuit for that fuse and everything connected to it. It's a PIA but it's something you'll have to do, unless you want to pay dealer prices.

Dashboard is dead

hello Sylvia i think you have had your dash board taken out at some
stage previous to your owning it, there is a big electrical connector
that hooks up to the printed circuit board behind your dash. you will
need to get a techy to pull off the plastic masks around your dash
and unscrew the speedo console. we used to get alot of this fault
here in New Zealand when sellers of vehicles were clocking the
speedo's to show a lower mileage reading on the odometer, very
nasty.

The vehicle computer can sense low voltage, so is warning the driver the care is about to fail. Replace the battery with a new one and you should be good to go. The computer will reset once the power is cut off during the battery switch, and reboots during the new battery power up.;

Broken rear wiper motor, could it cause a drain on the car battery?

you have a BIG short somewhere in your car, I would check ALL of the fuses and see what is blowing them out once you find the fuse(s) that are blowing. (it would be a good idea to get a book like Haynes, Chilton, etc.for the car) you will need to trace the circuit(s) in the book to find out where the short is, but if you don't then you WILL have other major problems down the road.

How to find electrical short if not started in about 2 days battery is drand dead. replaced battery with new one.

The best test for this is.... Well before starting this test make sure your doors are closed and everything is off. Then ...Take (disconnect) one end of the battery cable, the Positive or negative it don't mater witch one. Put a 12 volt test light between the two disconnected (cable and battery end)...now if the light is lit, then you have a voltage drain somewhere...to find out were it is you will have too start to remove your fuses one at a time until your test light goes off...for example: if you pulled your cigaret lighter fuse and the light went off then you know there is a problem with that circuit...ect......

This sounds a little confusing but it is fairly easy..i sure hope this helps you out..Good Luck

1993 regal custom new battery installed 3 weeks ago or so car sat for 2 weeks now car is dead had charging system checked with new battery all ok

You have something draining your battery when the vehicle is off. Connect an ammeter to see what amperage is drawn when the vehicle is at rest and off (with the doors closed so that you don't read the draew from the dome/courtesy lights). Begin pulling and replacing fuses one at a time to determine which circuit is causing the abnormal current flow then troubleshoot that circuit. Many times the fault can be traced to a glove box, trunk or underhood light that does not shut off.
