A8 4.2 v8 engine overheating v reg 1999 no oil loss check system ok temp falls to normal if heater on full maybe engine fan failure ? coolant level ok thanks craig

Run it and let it get hot (not to the point of overheating just let it warm up to normal or slightly above normal).  put your hand near the upper radiator hose, if you feel not heat, touch it, be careful as it may be hot.  if it is not hot at all but the engine is warmed up it is the thermostat, the thermostat is located where the upper radiator hose connects to the motor, usually a 2bolt metal fitting, if this is the case just replace the thermostat.

1 How do you know it is not running hot? Engines run normally at close to 90 deg. C, that is, close to the boiling point of water. The pressure cap on the radiator ensures that the water does not steam off at this temperature.
2 If the engine is not running hot and the gauge shows that it does, the gauge is faulty, probably the sender unit. I am not sure of the Buick, but some cars have two senders, one for the gauge on the dash and the other for the radiator fan. If your car has only one, the information from the sender is probably used by the ecu to switch on the fan, so if the sender is faulty you will get the symptoms you describe.

Some things to check - make sure that the radiator fan is coming on at the right temperature. It might not be turning on at all due to a blown fuse or a bad fan relay. Also, when the engine is up to temperature make sure the thermostat is opening up properly and be sure the radiator itself is not clogged. When the engine begins to overheat, turn the heater on (full heat, highest blower speed) and see if you get hot air and the engine temp begins to come down. This will tell you of the coolant is circulating properly.

eeek, sounds like a possible head gasket failure. Check your coolant and oil. If the coolant is low top it off, and if the oil is milky, you are getting coolant in your oil which is usually a bad head gasket.

Has coolant level been going down in return reservoir at all, as in have you had to add coolant recently to bring it up to top level? Have you tried running engine from cold, with heater on and let it run up to normal temperature with cap off return reservoir? If not do so, and watch level in reservoir and if it goes down, add as needed until engine running at normal, and not overheating. Allow rad fan to kick on & off a few times before re-installing cap on reservoir. Pay close attention to engine temp while doing this. If it goes high, shut it off and let cool. Be careful, my son's Passat just had overheat problem and turned out to be impeller on water pump ( internally) was spinning on shaft of pump. Thermostat is certainly a consideration if coolant is full, and all air bled out. Keep me posted on what happens when you run with cap off and keep reservoir full. Don't forget, heater on while doing this.

Hi, check your coolant level. When the coolant level falls below a certain level the heater core is bypassed. It would also explain your truck overheating if the coolant level was low. If your coolant is that low, check to see where the coolant is going. External leaks are not too bad, but those engines (4.3 and 2.2) were prone to internal gasket leaks also. Check your oil, it shouldn't be milky white.

My 1999 Chevy malibu keeps overheating even when the heater is on what is the problem?


You may have a radiator leak. Or your coolant level is low. Using the heater is not a solution to an overheating vehicle. You can usually smell coolant and see the leak. Often times a gasket can leak mixing engine oil and coolant, decreasing effectiveness of both sytems. Check color of fluids make sure the cooloant is viscus and not sludgy.

Also check coolant fan electric connections and fuses. The fan really cools down the engine moreso than coolant. It should kick on when your engine reaches a certain temp. If it does not the vehicle will overheat.

2002 malibu runs hot.


Sounds like you have a faulty head gasket or maybe a cracked head.This can cause overheating and the check engine light to come on.The code for the o2 sensor is probably caused by coolant getting into the exhaust system and coating the sensor.The coolant fan may work but it cannot remove enough heat from the rad to make the engine cool off.Try some engine coolant stop leak to see if it will help.This maybe only a temperary fix.Let me know if you need more.MOE

What is the check gauges light


CHECK GAGES light (1) indicates a potential engine failure(low oil pressure, low coolant, coolant overheating) has occurred.
· Check gages and shut down engine. Gages should read as follows: Oil pressure 5 to 10 psi (34 to 69 kPa) at idle; Water Temp gage below 230 degrees (110 C).
· Check engine oil level (Para 2-11) if OIL PRESS gage indicates low reading. Check coolant level (Para 2-11) if Water Temp gage indicates high reading. Notify Unit Maintenance if levels are low.

If CHECK ENGINE light (2) is on, check engine oil pressure gage (3) and water temperature gage (4). If both indicate normal, proceed with mission and then notify Unit Maintenance. If either one does not indicate normal, stop engine immediately and notify Unit Maintenance

Engine overheating audi 4.2 a8 1999


I would have the cooling fan checked, and have the thermostat changed. An overheated thermostat (overheating caused by something else) will cause problems in the future.
