This is one job I would not try at home, it required special equipment and it is very easy to get the fluid level wrong and this can cause other problems. I would recommend going to a transmission shop.

I own a 04 XLT and I had to replace the trans at less than 80k miles. Some hesitation before shifting is normal, for that type of transmission. Unfortunately the 2004 Explorers have well known transmission problems. Theres a few sites around the net trying to file lawsuits at Ford for this problem. My problem was the PCM was offsetting the shifts which causes it to mesh gears and it wasn't pretty. Chances are the trans is starting to fail, take it to a trans shop to change fluid and cross your fingers. Theres no way to do this at home, it requires a vaccumm pump and knowledge on what your doin, gotta love ford for sealed transmissions. As soon as you can, get rid of the vehicle, I am as soon at I figure out whats wrong with mine.

The only way is take off the trans pan but you will need a gasket and go ahead and change trans filter you will see the filter once you take the pan off

Should I add XL11 trans fluid additive/friction modifier to my fluid when I replace my solenoid pack with the latest design?

Have a good Auto transmission repairer give the box a service and this should fix your problem.
Do not put additives into oil as if they were required Shell Mobil Caltex BP Castrol and all other manufacturere would have put the additive in when ther were refining the oil

I have a 95 explorer that the o/d light will start flashing.the ****** shops are saying that third gear is slipping, but i don't feelit slipping. just curious what it could possibly be. the error i am...

I would first try changing the fluid and filter. Although the fluid may look like it is brand new, with 100K on the fluid, I can assure you that even if those miles were all highway at steady speed and no load that the fluid has deteriorated and no longer lubricating the internal parts properly and that there is some debris in the ******.

If codes return and shifting problems are still present, there is definite internal failure, possibly the pump or in the clutches. It is a 3-4 shift error. The affected componant are Shift solenoid A or B or internal ****** parts. An engine rpm drop was not detected when the 3-4 shift was commanded by the PCM.

Improper gear selection depending on failure mode and transmission range selector lever position. Refer to Shift Solenoid Operation Chart. Shift errors may also be due to other internal transmission concerns such as stuck valves or damaged friction material.

This fault code means that the trans is going bad and slipping.Theres not much that can be done from the outside. If you choose to fix it, id go with a good used to keep costs down. You can locate one at www.car-part.com

Hope this helps (remember to rate and comment this answer).

Wheres the transmission fluid plug located

I'm assuming this is an automatic transmission for which there will be no drain plug. If you're wishing to drain and refill the trans. you need to remove the trans oil pan and replace the filter and gasket(kit is about $20-30) and then get a funnel and refill through the trans dipstick tube. Start with 2 quarts, run and shift through all the gears and then check your lavel and fill as necesary by half quarts at a time.

Not shifting into gear properly

If the trans. hasn't been serviced every 30,000 miles and it has over 100,000 miles on it, it's problem is normal wear and tear. The only way to fix it right to rebuild it. You can add Lucas trans. additive to it. It worked miracles in my ford truck. Use two bottles. It will free up the valves and seals to buy you some time.

Honda 2004 transmission gear box

Hi sounds like a problem I was starting to have in my 04 Accord. It would shutter terribly between gears. We had changed trans. fluid every 60k miles but evidently that wasn't good enough. I was shopping for a trans when I talked to my mechanic and he recommended new fluid. We drained and refilled trans twice and now drain and refill trans pan every other oil change ( about 20k w/ synthetic). After the fluid change trans. is doin great. Don't run and go pay for a trans flush at a local shop. I worked at a very highend dealership as a service writer and trust me it is a rip. In your honda you have drain plug just drain and refill, then run, repeat. It will do the same thing just takes a little longer. I have 190k on "The 04" now and it just won't quit! Honda's Rock!

PO 171 and PO174 codes but different problem

transmision shifts are based on engine load imputs a 171 and 174 refer to a lean condition therefor the shift is being based on an assumed cold engine so yes it may be related

My automatic focus sometimes will not go into gear properly

This may be caused by fluid starvation from a plugged trans filter, also a shift solenoid inside the trans may be sticking, I would recommend u change the trans fluid and filter (required at 60,000 miles), also go to a Kragen auto or any chain parts store like it and ask to have a code test run on the powertrain control module , it is free.
