Question about 1998 Buick Century

1 Answer

My Mom has a 98 Buick Century Limited. The temp gauge is normal but she has a "low coolant" alert. She needs to add coolant. She's 82. Does she add coolant via the overflow reservoir or should it be added by removing the pressurized radiater cap (after the car is cool). She lives 50 miles away.

Still Cannot Find Coolant Temp Sens

Over heats then go's cold then gets hot then cold fast then hot slow then rigt befor it over heat it go clod agin

What you are seeing is the thermostat opening and closing as the coolant heats up within the system. This, in itself, is normal. However, NORMALLY, you will not see such radically fluctuating temps on the gauge. This problem is usually due to a low coolant level in the system. This results in air being trapped in the system and that is what causes the radical gauge swings. Check the coolant level with the engine cold; fill the coolant and add coolant to the reservoir as needed and recheck.

Coolant in topped off. engine does not go over half way on temp gauge. low fluid level light keeps blinking. what is the problem. 1998 buick century

The sending unit for the coolant is bad. Your I believe is on the passenger side mounted it the radiator about 10" down. It is square. There is a clip that holds it in. remove it and pull the unit out and shove the other one in. Coolant will come out, so do it when it cold.

I have a 2001 Century Buick and my low coolant light keeps coming on, although I have coolant in my tank. I have also changed the sensor recently. What could be the problem?

Hi!!
You may have air in the system. There should be a bleeding valve on top of the thermostat housing, where the upper radiator hose connects to the engine. Look in your owner's manual for the procedure to bleed air from your cooling system.
As long as the temp. gauge shows normal readings, you should not worry about any damage to the engine. Once the system has been bled, take the vehicle to an AutoZone or similar auto parts store to get the Low Coolant light reset, or, wait until it resets itself.
Good Luck! A HELPFUL - 4 THUMBS - rating for this solution would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for using FixYa!!

Porbably is normal temp. Temps are higher, these days, to assist in low emissions. Needs to be 200 to 230 range, usually. The thermostat does not open until just under 200 or so.

I think your buick has a pressure coolant system so you may have air in the system and need too bleed it and for the light coming on while on the highway most likely low coolant when your driving the higher rpm the more coolant is drawn into the motor and triggering the light from coolant reservoir running low on coolant

Low coolant light, temp normal

try adding it via the reservoir. make sure you have a 50/50 mix of water and antifreeze. If you want to cheat, cheat on the side of more antifreeze than water. Look for a leak in the hoses and water pump to find out if she has a larger problem that is causing the loss of coolant. look for drips under the car.
