Is there fluid? is there NO power steering or just very little assist? There is an electrical connector on the steering rack that if not plugged in will cause very little power steering assistance

there would not be any warnings. try letting vehicle sit overnight to let bubbles out then before starting it turning wheels left to right 3 times with engine off. Then restart vehicle and see if that helps. if there is an air pocket the system will not function.

Hi, When a grinding noise is detected first locate the area of the car it is being generated from. Sound as though you have a serpentine belt . One belt that runs all of your pump in front of your motor. Your belt broke or your belt tension er failed. First fix hose leak then replace belt. Easy should not cost more than $50 at a good shop, unless tensioner need to be replaced up to $150.

Power steering fluid

I would use just power steering fluid. ATF can be used but has a tendincy to "clean out" and sometimes cleans out seals, causing it to leak.
