Temp gauge goes upand down no heat from heater cold air

Car temp gauge went up, car overheated, had Flush & Fill service, now Temp gauge goes all the way up, Ar 2000 Rpm, Temp gauge goes down to 195, then goes up and down when u accelerate, the heater is giving very little heat, then changes to all cold air. No apparent leaks, engine steam clean, antifreeze is fine, The miledge is 80,000, owner never had cooling system FLUSHED until NOW! Checked oil,seems fine no milky substance. The temp gauge goes up and down, no sign of overheating, also no heat from heater, changed to cold air. Help, I need heat this week is going to be 21 Degrees very cold, thank you.Motor is 3100 V-6, automatic,Pontiac Grand Prix.

It is probably the problem. To make shure that need to change the gaskets, one of the symptoms use to be thet the temp rises when you are running at speed 50+ average, where is supposed that the car gets a lot of air due by the speed and nobody thinks that will be overheated.

Okay. warm up vehicle, get radiator hoses hot.  Turn on heater, fan on low.  Grip both rubber heater hoses close to the firewall, from the engine compartment side.  They should be too hot to hold for long.  If they are not hot, then you have a lack of coolant circulation to the heater hoses.  If they are hot then access heater core, behind glove box area.  Blend door which moves as you chose HOT or Cold, should be cable controlled, move the controls and be sure the door is actually moving. try running it to running temp and try to check the heater core hoses. if one is hotter then other may have pluged up heater core.

Are you sure you got all the air out of the cooling system? Air pockets are very common problem when you do any work to the cooling system. An air pocket will do what you discribe.

The first solution sounds like that might be the problem if you have trans fluid in the coolant reservoir. If you have oil in the coolant reservoir then this is normally caused when you have a crack in the intake manifold or if the gasket has gone bad. You can either pull the intake manifold off and replace the gasket and check for any cracks in the intake manifold. You may not see the crack. If you do find a crack in the manifold the best thing to do is replace it, change the gasket and then flush out the radiator.

2003 chrysler town and coy try, temp gauge goes up and heater gets warm when idling, but as we drive the temp gauge goes way down and heater blows cool air. Any suggestions?


1. Engine Coolant Temperature.
If the thermostat in the cooling system is getting stuck in the open or partially open position rather than opening and closing as needed to keep the coolant at the required operating temperature then you will get the results you have described here with the coolant temp dropping as you drive. The radiator is providing optimum cooling when the car is moving and there is plenty of cold air flow through it.
I am assuming the temp gauge in the vehicle is reading correctly.

Thermostats in the cooling system do become faulty in time and it may well never have been changed (or only changed once) since the car was built and is possibly gummed up with debris. With those symptoms I would definitely change the thermostat. Make sure a full flush of the cooling system is done at the same time and refilled with fresh coolant.

2. In Car Heater.
I would not worry about the interior heating until you change the thermostat on the cooling system. However if you continue to get cold air from the heater then there will be an issue with hot coolant from the cooling system being restricted in flowing through the heater core.

Sounds like the water pump is cavitating . Replace water pump. Check coolant level also. Open the bleeder valve usually located on thermostat housing to remove air from system. close valve when coolant is present while filling. close radiator cap and top off recovery bottle to correct level. These engines are prone to overheating, do not let temp gauge get in the red.

Your temp sensor has nothing to do with your heater. The temp sensor needs coolant in order to work properly. So first check the coolant level because if it is low your heater will act the way you describe. Once the coolant gets low enough the heater will blow cold. Another possibility is the radiator cap. After the engine has warmed up it expands when it cools down it contracts. As it is contracting if the cap is weak air can be drawn into the system and cause air pockets to form and will cause the same problem

does the heater work good, like real HOT when the truck is HOT? if not, flush the heater core with a water hose, both directions. Now when the truck is HOT open the hood and feel the air coming thorough the radiator, it should be HOT. if its not, the radiator may be plugged. If the mechanic has a Temp Gun, have him check the radiator temp, it should be uniformly HOT if you find cold spots (like if the radiator is 200f and there are places that are 150f) the radiator is plugged and "flushing" will do nothing.

2000 Mercury Villager w/ heat, no heat, & temp gauge flux


you have air trapped in the system.
Park facing uphill (on car ramps if you have them).
with cold engine, remove radaitor cap and fill radiator.
Fill reservoir.
leave cap on loose.
Turn on heater.
start engine and run until upper radiator hose gets hot (meaning thermostat has opened).
Check coolant level and top off. Repeat until temp gauage reads normal and heat is coming from heater ducts.
