Question about Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

My engine misses and loses fuel pressure, and engine surges when switching between brights and dims. Can this happen because of a bad battery?

Engine begins missing particularly between 2.5k and 3k rpms, surges when turning on/off brights and emergency lights, etc. Tried replacing map sensor and crank position sensor to no avail, it runs good the first few minutes after cranking, then gets worse until no fuel pressure. Battery reads somewhat low on voltmeter. Also, no signal at OBDII port.

SOURCE: 1997 DODGE RAM 1500 360 VERY LOW IDLE

I think you have ruled out the engine with all the parts you have replace. The transmission torque convertor is in lock up mode all the time. The engine is having to hard of a time to stay at the normal idle. The over drive clutches and soleniod are most likely damaged in the transmission.
I think you should take the vehicle to a trasnmission shop , The can check the torque convetror soleniods and pressure control soleniod.

The oil light coming on bothers me. I know you have the rebuilt engine in the vehicle but I think the oil pump in the engine is starting to go out or could be weak. The lower bearings connected to the crank shaft might be starting to leak. Have the oil pressure checked .

what engine, there are 2, 2.5L and 4.0, I have both here.(wranglers)
can be 50 things , but in pure physics far less.
1:lost 12vdc electrical power, you see lamps and things dim out....
2: loses engine compression badly hot, one or more cylinder (a $20 gage finds it)
3: bad spark, caused by not doing tuneups at 60k miles.
and timing, test. for spark at each plug and check timing after a tune up we do that. full 60k. not just spark plugs.
4: bad fueling. this can be a huge list of possibles.
a: bad sensors.
b: low fuel pressure, fuel starvation ($20 tool to test)
c: too high pressure , engine floods, spark tips, soaked in raw fuel.
d; bad injectors (clogged, leaking or dead) $20 tool to test.

there are tests. for each class of failure. 1 to 4.
do you want to guess, or test. its your choice .
buy tools or go broke guessing.

How do you know if your spark plugs are the problem?

bad spark plug or bad wire will cause one cylinder not fire cause engine to surge.but change spark plugs and wires, if engine still surge have fuel filter changed, check fuel pressure weak fuel pump will cause engine surge.if you see check engine light flashing code scan for faulty TPS SENSOR OR FAULTY FUEL INJECTOR OR BAD IGNITION COIL.FAULT IN THE PCM.

My 1988 Ford Bronco 2 loses horsepower.

I would suspect a bad fuel pump and plugged fuel filter for something sitting that long without use, but that doesn't explain the high fuel use. Check the fuel pressure at the test port in the fuel rail above the injectors, it should be about 40 to 50 PSI. If it is much higher, suspect the pressure regulator. Is the check engine light on? If so, rent a scanner, read the code(s), and follow the clues to repairs. If the alternator were going bad, you'd be losing battery charge. If something is bad with the ignition, the code reader should pick it up.

Engine shakes periodically; warm or cold. Bad Coil?

the p 0300 codes gives you the clue
it is random misfires and that is predominately from injector and low fuel pressure
pulling a plug lead will amke no difference if there is no fuel in that cylinder to ignite
bad coils will be a constant miss regardless
try putting a can of quality injector cleaner in the tank to see if that fixes the problem
have a fuel pressure tset done to check for pump, filter or pressure regulator problems

1997 Nissan Hardbody has rough idle/surges/stalls

the 2001 altima is what i have and I had the same problem as you. turned out to be a bad head gasket factory used cheap ones for a few years before they found the problem. one way to test this is to get a can of carborator cleaner and spray it around the area where the head meets the block under the intake problem should be around the 4th cylinder or close to driver side. if the head gasket is bad the rough idle will smooth out while you are spraying the head.

Hi your problem is with the ground wires! Start at the battery and work your way from there. You should find one from the engine to the body, one on each side near the headlights. That should solve it! Frankster016
