I have had the same problem on my 04 grand cherokee. I hit a bump in the road and it soundss like something is loose.....when it does that, you can feel it through the seat, especially on the passenger side. I first thought it was the muffler. I just bought new shocks. I thought it was the shocks. I took a crowbar to everything underneith to see if something was loose...I thought it was the ball joints? It turns out to be the damn cheap swaybar bushing that jeep put on it. Look at the ends of the front and rear sway bars. There are links holding them on. Those stupid bushing are most likely bad. It cost me $200 to have someone fix. You could do it yourself, but I am not sure where to get the correct parts. I also didn't want to be bothered. Good luck.

Noises are even for someone "on site" somewhat difficult to diagnose. Look under the vehicle to make sure nothing stupid is going on, such as a plastic bag stuck to one of the driveline components. While under there, check that nothing that is supposed to be attached isn't.
Best thing you can do is have someone put it up on a lift and just run it to see where the noise is coming from. I could sit here all day guessing and never hit on a solution.

Turn off the AC system and see if this stops, it may be due to the AC compressor cycling rapidly due to a low charge of refrigerant..

I have a 2004 Jeep Overland and it has few

Sounds like a heater core/thermostat problem or blend door problem. The grinding noise sounds like a transfer case problem. If your mechanic cant figure out the problem you need a new mechanic.

2004 jeep grand cherokee overland, 2.7 CRD, half to full lock, left or right, front end juddering and scrubbing tyres off

Sounds like it is in 4 wheel drive mode.
If you have a switch to disconnect the 4 wheel drive it may not be working.
If the vehicle is full time 4 wheel drive or computer controlled 4 wheel drive you have most likely a locked in full 4 wheel drive mode situation.
Not good on dry pavement.

I had a similar problem with my 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee. It turned out that the battery posts and cables were corroded. I cleaned them up and it solved the problem immediately. Something to check on before you spend the money on a new battery anyway!
