SOURCE: Toyota Corolla DX 97 Engine Light EGR valve PLEASE HELP

You can try cleaning the EGR valve and passages with Seafoam. A bottle costs just a few dollars at any auto parts store or discount store. With the engine running, squirt/spray it in through the brake booster hose, or through the PCV hose. This will cause smoke to come out the exhaust. This is normal and will disappear after a few minutes. If Seafoam does not do the trick, then you can still disassemble the EGR valve from the throttle body and clean it with throttle body cleaner.

SOURCE: check engine light on-code says egr valve is bad

the egr system consists of control circuits as well as the egr valve itself. troubleshooting will have to be performed in order to pinpoint the fault. the valve may just need cleaning. there may be damage in the long run since the egr system introduces exhaust gas to the air intake to reduce combustion temperatures.

Not passing smog, no code or engine light

Its going to be tough to find the problem without access to a 4 gas machine. Especially if there are no trouble codes in the computer.
If the fuel mixture is rich it should set a code for one or both O2 sensors. Same thing if the EGR is not working, etc.
One thing that could cause problems is the thermostat not getting the engine up to normal temp.

I replaced the plugs and air filter on my 2000 tacoma 2.7 liter and i am getting terrible gas mileage and a funny emissions smell

smells to a wrong spark plug type, double check your numbers, if doubt call your locall toyota dealer parts department. Toyota vehicles are very sentimental about originall equipment plugs, dont like aftermarket plugs, also check your air filter housing and make shure all hoses are atached.
Good luck

I have a 2005 Dodge Dakota V8 4x4 My check engine light turned on. I took the truck to Autozone to have them hook up the machine and see what the problem was. It said I have a bad EGR Valve. I havent...

It can affect mileage, but it might not be the valve. EGR systems tends to get clogged by gunk. Take the valve off and see how dirty things are. If the system is clogged up, take apart as much as you can to clean it up. You can test the valve for operation with a good scanner (autozone doesn't do this--they just tell you the code). Here are instructions from autozone.com:

Linear EGR Valve Diagnosis
The linear EGR valve diagnosis procedure varies depending on the vehicle make and model year. Always follow the recommended procedure in the vehicle manufacturer's service manual. The scan tester may be used to diagnosis a linear EGR valve. The engine should be at normal operating temperature prior to EGR valve diagnosis. Since the linear EGR valve has an EVP sensor, the actual pintle position may be checked on the scan tester. The pintle position should not exceed 3% at idle speed. The scan tester may be operated to command a specific pintle position, such as 75%, and this commanded position should be achieved within two seconds. With the engine idling, select various pintle positions and check the actual pintle position. The pintle position should always be within 10% of the commanded position. When the linear EGR valve does not operate properly:
  • Check the fuse in the 12 V supply wire to the EGR valve.
  • Check for open circuits, grounds, and shorts in the wires connected from the EGR valve winding to the PCM.
  • Use a digital voltmeter to check for 5 v on the reference wire to the evp sensor.
  • Check for excessive resistance in the EVP sensor ground wire.
  • Leave the wiring harness connected to the valve, and remove the valve. Connect a digital voltmeter from the pintle position wire at the EGR valve to ground, and manually push the pintle upward. The voltmeter reading should change from approximately 1 V to 4.5 V.

If the EGR valve did not operate properly on the scan tester and tests 1 through 5 are satisfactory, replace the valve.

Here is what your valve looks like:

1991 toyota supra blue smoke from tail pipe when get of the gas

The intake valve guide seals are worn and are letting oil slip by under high engine vacuum--as when you let up on the gas. The only fix is to take the cylinder head off and replace the valve guide seals. This problem is pretty normal for an older car with high mileage. It will probably run just fine. Just keep checking the oil level and keep it topped up.

take a look at the EGR valve it could be either vacum controlled or electronic either way what seems to be the problem is that the valve is stuck in the open position until the engine warms up you can gently tap the egr valve with a small hammer or a screw driver and you can see that it runs smooth, now if the egr valve is vacum controlled replace the valve. if it is electronoc controlled replace the valve and the module for the egr valve.

Single female with intermitatant emission problems(please help)

I vented yesterday about GM so won't repeat it here.

You should be able to locate the EGR valve by checking anything attached to the exhaust manifold and following lines.

The EGR is typically equipped with a drum shaped housing with fittings on the top and bottom, sometimes (often) mounted on the exhaust manifold itself.
The drum houses the diaphragm that is controlled by vacuum and opens a small path between the exhaust manifold and the intake side to inject (supposedly) some unburned gases to burn again.

Since we are kind of anonymous here, I can admit to having cheated all of them since it mostly brings a little more mileage.
Stuffing a ball bearing in the vacuum hose and reattaching it to the EGR lets it appear to be functional.
While still in CA, we never had a vehicle fail emissions testing despite this 'cheat.'

If the EGR valve has failed and stuck open, then exhaust gases are entering even at an idle which can cause the symptoms you describe.
Engines running at mid-RPMs can tolerate the garbage being fed them without gagging, but not at an idle.

Good luck-
