spark timing way off. or burned valves.
i dont think a 4L can change cam timing. (gears)
that is gross misfire,
so bad it backfires to the throttle body and air cleaner
in all cases is bad spark timing, or worse burned valves.
bad rotor & cap,?
doing a tune up get rid of that carbon tracked bad cap.
and timing magically works.

TCar stopped dead .....timing belt broke on 2002dodge

Sorry for this bad news but if the timing belt broke or jumped then you will need to pull heads due to bent valves.
When the timing belt breaks it leaves valves open or throws the timing off which causes the pistons to come up and hit and bend valves,
the only way to know how much valve damage and to repair is to remove the cylinder head or heads and see.

Can a timing chain cause the valves to go bad if the timing chain breaks in a 2005 Cavalier? I have a Cavalier that wouldnt start. Long story short they replace the timing belt & still wont start. I...

Yes its a big fault if the timing belt breaks whilst the engine is running you could need a few new valves and possibly a new piston or two as well

What can cause me to lose a cylinder in my 03 chevy malibu

loss of compression: bad valve seating, bad valves, really bad timing, broken timing belt, bad rings...spark plug not tight. Bad spark plug wire, bad spark plug,.,.. etc., etc., etc.. Got some more details - say on how this came to be - engine size,. etc?
Best regards

I can't tell if you mean the engine is vague, slow, or retarded, or the automatic transmission is.
I will assume it is the engine, because the automatic would be rare in the Sportage.

There are lots of possible causes.

If the spark is weak, plugs have too wide of a gap, or have too much soot, it will lack power.
A smaller gap, like .028" will be more powerful, but not as likely to pass pollution testing.

Timing can't be adjusted I believe because it uses a cam sensor, but timing like 7 degrees BTDC has the most power.

Fuel problems such as clogged filter, excess gas tank vacuum, low pump pressure, intake manifold leaks, bad EGR valve, dirty MAS, bad temperature sensor, bad O2 sensor, etc,. can all do it.
If you hear hiss when opening gas tank filler, the purge valve is probably bad and not allowing air into to the tank.
Look for PCV foam contaminating the MAS, and clean it as needed.
Check sensors with ohmmeter. Bad sensors are usually 0 or infinite ohms.

At his age, it could be you also just have bad compression.
Pull the plugs and do a compression test. The engine is used like an air pump and if under 110 psi, has either leaky rings or valves.
Look for one plug different than the others.

Valve timing could also be off by only 1 notch. Check camshaft and crankshaft alignment marks. Timing belt needs replacement every 90,000 miles anyway. If the timing is off and you replace the belt, you may want to consider replacing the timing belt driven water pump as well.

Timing belt keeps jumping tim 3 times know reset runs good for awhile

You have a bad timing belt tensioner. Stop driving it because you are probably due for a new timing belt also if the tensioner is bad. If the timing belt breaks while you are driving it, serious damage may occur like a valve punching through a piston, bent valve, damaged cam, serious stuff can happen if the timing belt breaks.

My timing tensioner went bad would you say i may

you could have bent the valves. but not necessarily. Get your timing reset and do a compression test. That wil tell you if you bent a valve. f one cylinder is way lower than the others then you bent a valve.

Where is the expansion valve

It does not have an expansion valve. It uses a fixed orifice tube in the line. They seldom go bad (get plugged).

What are your symptoms that make you think you have a bad orifice?

The a/c system compressor should cycle on and off about 4 times/minute at 70 degrees F. AT 90 F, it should stay engaged all the time. The on/off control is a pressure switch, usually on the accumulator bottle.

Got random misfiring and found the number 7 cylinder the valve got bent from the piston hitting it when it was partly opened. Took to dodge they said it was from something in my fuel so i used teh fuel up...

the fuel filter and the fuel injectors have filters that filter in the microns range.something is not right about all of this.there is no way a particle big enough to do that damage got in there .

check to see if the injector signal wire is shorted to ground, to check this disconnect the ECM, pull the connector off the injector, the red lead is 12 volts, the other wire is the signal wire, probe the connector with one end of a Ohm meter and touch the other to ground, there should be no more than 3 ohms showing.
