Depending on the year, some models have a switch on the base of the steering column if the shifter is up there..and on rthe shifter linkage on the transmission itself for the floor type..sometimes it can be adjusted on the mount but if its acting up..replace it.. good luck..

try checking you Park/Neutral safety switch. if that's faulty it will do exactly what you are saying and while you're at it test the ignition switch but i'm leaning towards the safety switch

SOURCE: will not crank, battery is good, starter is good

Sounds like it may be a starter motor problem. If the brushes are worm to their limit sometimes it will work perfectly and sometimes it will be dead. If you tap the starter motor you may find it magically starts as the brushes make a bit more of a contact. Same goes for the solenoid which is attached to the starter. Other causes could be a faulty ignition switch, bad earth, terminal connections or park/neutral lockout switch.

SOURCE: Hi,

The weld on the manual lever is known to break loose. First, with the wheels off the ground, with the lever in the park position, does the drive shaft lock in park? If yes or no sometimes, drop the trans pan. I bet the nut on the lever camd loose.

What will make my truck shut off while driving. The truck runs well, will shut off without indication. I can start it back in neutral or park, sometimes it will turn over once or twice then start.

its a brake failure system problem

those codes say
hey this truck doesn't have a working abs brake system
STOP this truck

abs module could be a leaky or failed pressure valve
wheel sensors ..dirty or insulation cracked

no rear speed signal is generated as abs system fails

P0440-Evap Emissions. code of is a different issue

Tip

Truck will not start, everything else seems fine

If the truck will not start, and it is an automatic, wiggle your shifter up and down a bit, you may have a faulty MLPS sensor, which causes the truck to think it is not in park or neutral, which will not allow the truck to start. If the truck does not start after that, you may need to troubleshoot the truck some more

Car starts in neutral not in park

I would look at the operation and/or adjustment of the gear selector and the transmission range sensor (often mistakenly referred to as a 'neutral safety switch").

I say adjustment because the Neutral gate is mid-range of the selector, while the Park gate is at one end of the range. Thus, if the selector mechanism and the sensor position are not properly aligned, the sensor amy more accurately report the Neutral gate than the Park gate, resulting in cranking in the Neutral position but not while in Park.

Do you sometimes have to wiggle the shifter in Neutral to get it to crank?

You probably need a linkage adjustment,a neutral safety switch adjustment or replacement of the neutral safety switch.

Mazda 6 won't start; battery is ok & headlight is ok

Test the neutral switch.

===

Foot on brake

MOVE SHIFTER BACK FROM PARK AND NEUTRAL 10-20 times. This will re-new the metal contacts.

Shift to netural "N"

Start engine

Put lever back to Park "P" to warm up the truck.

====

If it start from neutral and not park then you will need a neutral safety switch.

Hi, I have a 2001 Isuzu Rodeo. Runs great, but lately, one time out of 10 it wont start. I can hear the relay, but it doesn't even try and turn over. Then i Put it in neutral, or rock the truck and it...

If shifting into neutral works you may have a damaged parking safety switch. Some vehicles have one for neutral and one for park.

Be sure to check your battery and starting system too. A weak battery or worn starter solenoid are also likely causes.

Good luck and be careful!

2001 ford f150 supercab will not start park only in neutral , dome light is out and power windows will not work

Could be 3 unrelated problems.

1. The will not start in park. This seems like the DTR ( digital Transmission Range ) Sensor on the side of the automatic trans is not making contact in the Park position.
Quick test, wheel chock at least 2 sets of wheel on a level surface, with truck in park, and a friend pressing the brake pedal, have them turn the key to the run position.
Wait for the theft light to go out, and on the starter motor relay on the firewall, apply +12 V to the small gauge wire ( orange or orange w/ a stripe of color on it ). The starter motor relay will have 2 large battery cable size wires, and a smaller 16 AWG orange ( w or w/o color stripe ) on it. If this starts the truck, the DTR is the problem.

The orange wire runs through the DTR, and will only allow power to the starter relay in park or neutral. You seem to have a problem with the park side of the sensor.
It is on the driver's side of the trans, with a connector to it. Check the connector for water / corrosion prior to ordering a new one.
