SOURCE: Do the 94' nissan maxima have abs brakes

ABS was optional as an add-on for the GXE Model so I can't say whether you have them or not based on the model. When you turn your key to the on position before starting the car, if you see an ABS light, then your car will have abs. If there is no light, then most likely you do not have abs.

I have a 1987 GMC S-15,2 Wd,2.8 V-6.The proportioning valve leaks fluid when the brakes are applied. Can I replace the valve with any GMC model from around that year model? They appear to be the same?

only if the other models have the same brake set up as yours
the proportioning valve regulates the pressure to the rear brakes so if the brakes are discs on one and drums on the other , the settings will be different
otherwise no problems

What does the proportioning valve do?

Assuming you're talking about the brake system...
The proportioning valve is on the rear brakes only when the vehicle has rear Drum Brakes.
What it does is limits the brake line pressure to the rear brakes during normal stopping. This way the rear brakes don't lock up and cause the vehicle to fish tail or spin.
When you press the brakes harder than normal, the proportioning valve opens more to allow more line pressure so you're able to stop faster.

98 dodge caravan rear wheel locked up

That would likely be caused by the ABS brake hydraulic control unit leaking pressure to the rear brake caliper, not the proporting valve..

I have a gq nissan patrol and only the front brakes are working

you will need to see if a) there is enough fluid in the system, b) that the fluid is getting to the rear, and c) there is not a mechanical issue at the rear itself.

A) open and see if the reservoir is full to the line on the side
B) check that the fluid is getting back there by cracking the lines open, starting from the back and working your way forward. (also look for cracked or leaking soft hoses while you are at it) <sometimes a very hard stop or leak can make the proportioning valve stick shut ( a safety feature to ensure that you still have SOME brakes)>
C) make sure that the rear brake assembly is still OK (good shoes, wheel cylinder(s) are working, drums not too eaten up, hardware not broken/ stuck/ missing)

Rear brakes locking up

Sounds like you either have a rear piston leak(if you have rear drums) or the parking brake may not be returning. If all this checks out then you may want to have the proportioning valve checked

Check condition of brake drum and brake linings.
Check brake drum not out of round,
Check for fluid or oil leaks in the rear brake area.
Check rear brake proportioning valve is working correctly.

Was the proportion valve and mater cylinder replaced? The problem most likely is a bad proportion valve it doesn't allow the fluid to return to the master and therefore stays in the system and locks-up the brakes.
