Question about 1994 GMC Jimmy

1 Answer

Replaced the starter and battery on my 94 GMC Jimmy and when I turn the key the starter engages but does turn over. while having someone turn the key for me and watching to see what the starter would do I noticed that the starter would engage and sieze (not turning the flywheel) and would make a'clunk' sound and all the power drains until the key is turned back.

Sounds like a bad ingition switch. When you turn the key it pushes a rod that goes down the steering colum. The switch is located there. It's a pretty simple fix.

You can try this==== take a screw driver and tap on the relay switch with the handle while somebody is turning the ignition. This is only a test, not a definate solution. If you haven't already, check the starter solonoid. My opinion, if the ignition was bad, it wouldn't even click at the relay, but without testing it's hard to say.

The problem is in the transfer case. My mechanic said there is a pin that engages the 4x4. My pin sheared off. He replaced it. It works fine now.

The starter should have come with shims. You may have to adjust the new starter with the shims, so that the bendix, starter drive, meshes properly with the ring gear.
As long as the battery is fully charged it should turn the engine over.
Please let me know what you find.

2005 GMC Envoy XL. Will not engage starter. Like something electrical. Turn key and nothing. Worked fine until now.

Could be the neutral safety switch if it won't crank in neutral or park, could also be the starter has failed.

Car wont take a jump just clicks

First check the wiring to the battery, especially the ground wire to the starter. Because these are side mount batteries (normally), acid sometimes leaks onto the wires beneath the battery holder and can eat them away. Next, check the starter itself to see if you can (with the help of a buddy) hear or see the bendix engage. The starter is basically spring loaded so the gears come out and engage the engine when you turn the key and energize the starter. These are the two most common problems.

Not engaging the starter

If the starter is the original, it may be time for a replacement.

2001 GMC jimmy won't start. New starter, new

If the starter motor is turning the problem may be a broken flywheel tooth. If starter is not engaging the solenoid may be bad or not hooked up but that seems unlikely since starter was replaced. The problem's down there. If solenoid not clicking then problem may be further back.

Your description indicates a dead spot in the starter. When it does this and you keep turning the starter it moves past the dead spot and will start. This may require starter replacement.

Turn key and just get click sound. have tried to

Sounds like the starter is bad. The solenoid is working, (click sound) but the starter is not working. I would also check your battery cables.

How do I replace the starter

the starter will be at the rear of the engine. Disconnect all of the cables, remove the 3 or 4 bolts that hold it in. Pull it straight out of the engine. Install the new starter. Starters are fairly straightforward, but sometimes awkward to reach.
