What year? some later models have a probe tube that requires a tool to be inserted in it from the tune up analyser..other models have a plate near the harmonic balancer(big bottom pulley) cast into the block with numbers and slashes on it..usually between 4 and 10-12 degrees before TDC..top dead center.. is proper but the parts store will have specs on it for sure.you can use a light gun on these.. repost with further inquiries...thnx

SOURCE: 1992 Chevrolet Tahoe timing

timing on the chevy motors do not very much.
most of the older 350's timing are set about 8 deg before top dead center. some california smog certified 350 timing were set back to 0 deg or, at top dead center. check under the hood for a smog decal. it should have the timing specs, or it might say "timing not adjustable" or N/A. if it is missing the decal i would set it at 8 deg, road drive it, and listen for enging pinging on accelerating under load. if no ping i would leave it at 8 deg,if there is slight pinging i would ****** the timing in 2 deg increments until the pining stops. i would stop if i reach reach 0 deg or top dead center.

Im trying to time a 350 engine. it has two marks on it and im trying to time it at 34 degrees. One mark is 0 and one is 36 im pretty sure, but they are not labeled. So my question is which mark is which...

You paint or chalk the crank damper grouve first

Then you disconnect & plug the dist vacuum hose

Then you will see the grouve move up on the timing
tab as you turn the dist

Your setting the initial timing, not 34 on the tab

Don't forget the cam turns twice as fast as the crank
& thus the dist & then you add vacuum advance

Your setting the timing somewhere around 8 to 12 degrees
The correct setting should be on the radiator support

If the motor is in something different & you have an advance
timing light ,you can put 34 in the light & adjust the grouve
to O degrees on tab

I need to know the timing specs for a 1973 Chevy Chyenne 450

OK there's a 350 and a 454...not sure what you have there (no 450)
Timing on either engine was about 8 degrees before TDC. However, those specifications were made when real gasoline was available. Both engines used to actually like up to 12 degrees. Use the eight degree setting as a starting point for experimentation and see what the engine likes. Set timing with vacuum hose on distributor disconnected and plugged. Make sure advance mechanism on the dist is working and that the fly weights under the rotor are free. You can also experiment with using vacuum from above and below the throttle plate to see what it likes as well.

Adjust timing on 1985 olds delta 88 307 engine

Timing set a 20 degrees as factory specified.

Keep Backing off of timing 1 degree at a time until you don't have a pinging during acceleration.

Laging valve timing can not be fixed by simply advancing the ignition timing.

Check to see that you have less than 8 degrees of valve timing and you will be ok.

Hope this tip helps
