That's called "dieseling". It happens when the engine is hot and any excess gas is ignited. Try putting some injector cleaner in it to clean out impurities holding the excess gas and clogging the fuel system.

Why does it start and run, then dies?

Keep ur ear out . If it first turn the key on you'll ear the pum on tank going. If it keeps on then is plug . Another way to chek it is on the fuel injectors line. It looks like tire valve . Slowly press on fuel should came out. If not is the fuel pump. Be careful if u check x pressure keep ur face out of the way.

2004 chevy pickup starts but wont stay run ning then it dies and will restart and die

I had a similar problem with an '02 Dodge van after I had a key made to make sure I would be ok if the original was lost. Seems that the key needed to be programmed. Most Wal-Marts can accomplish this ,but it does cost a few bucks extra. I hope this will solve your problem.

My 2004 dodge ram turns over but sounds like is not getting fuel what can i do

I know I had the same problem with my 2004 3500 Cummins...try turning the key to the crank position and let it go (this will allow the fuel pump to run for about 25 seconds, basically priming the pump). Try starting the truck again, if it cranks over and sounds rough this is normal. Let it run until it goes back to normal. If you cannot crank the truck over keep repeating the process above (making sure you turn the key to the off position after each time you try). **This information I found out of my Chilton Dodge Repair Manual**

Engine experiences extended cranking to start it at times

Listen at the fuel tank when the key is turned on. The pump should run for a short time and shut off. If it continues to run, the pump is worn out and should be replaced. The fuel filter should be replaced if it hasn't been done lately.

Do the radiator fans turn when engine hot? Try turning them when engine is off and cold; they should spin freely. Could be bad solid state relay that controls them. Try blowing the debris out of the radiator fins from the inside of the engine compartment.

My 88 dodge pickup will not keep running with out some tention on the gas . I have a code 22 on my message board what do this mean

fuel injected models of your truck have an external idle kicker motor located on the throttle body acting directly on the throttle.
wiith the hood up u should be able to hear the kicker motor position itself for start when key turned to run position. if u dont hear a buzzy sound momentarily at the point you turn the key u may have a problem with adjusts idle speed with this device.
