The distributor runs on the cam gear inside the engine. If you just pulled it out without proper procedure to do that, the gear on the cam is now in the wrong position to set the distributor! You need to get a manual to help. Check out the Haynes auto repair manual for a 2002 Nissan Frontier and find the distributor alignment procedure in it.

Is the timing chain worn or old? Are you getting fuel to the cylinders? Is the fuel filter getting old and needs changing?

  • paul garland Jan 22, 2013

the fuel filter was stoped up put new one on cranked up but had a bad miss changed all the plugs rotor button cap and wires and it still has a miss i think it is out of time do you know what the idle speed is i looked under the hood and in the manual and don't see it

Nissan frontier will not start, will turn over but wont start.. gives p0340 code

what type frontier is it?? is it supercharged or not? p0340 is a cam position sensor issue. sensor is build into the distributor. by what you are saying, the distributor may be faulty. have you replaced the timing belt at 105k miles?? if belt is broken, distributor will not spin and vehicle will not start.

That should be right if it is an idler pulley. On belts that do not have idler pulley you will have to loosen lock bolt on adjuster. Like alternator

2002 Nissan Frontier timing belt

Timing belts are found on the 3.3L engines, timing chains are on the 2.4L engines. The 2002 3.3L Timing belt is changed at 105K during the major service. This service can run over one thousand dollars. It is recommended to replace the belt, tensioner and idlers, cam and crank seals, water pump, and both belts when changing the timing belt. That way, you only open up the front of the engine every 105K. Why change the timing belt and have a water pump start leaking only 20K later and ruin the belt with antifreeze? Other items during the 105K are a major tune up with all the fluids changed and a lube. This does get expensive. You can break it up into several blocks of time and spread the related service items out over a few months to take some of the sting off.
