Question about 2005 Ford Focus
Check your power steering fluid level. If it is low that is probably what is causing the noise. The pump is running dry. If that is the problem it means you have a leak somewhere. I have had this issue with my Focus for awhile. I just check the fluid often. I don't fix things until I absolutely have to. Check your manual my Focus uses transmission fluid for the power steering system.

That could be a loose belt. Sometimes it is caused by a vacuum leak. It could also be a transmission sound. Check the transmission oil level. That sometimes causes a whining sound.
Hope this helps.

SOURCE: Hi, I have a
nick, the best way to sort out your car is to get a diagnostic done(a main dealer has the kit,as does kwick fit)that way you can decide if you want to do the job or pay them to do it.(its too expensive for us to buy the computer)ask for a full diagnostic, not just the codes.

Check for vacuum lines going to transmission or any vacuum line under hood. It is possible an animal chewed on the lines or wires. We get a few reports of that at Fixya.
You might also look under the dash by the pedals for a vacuum leak. There are vacuum switches for parking brake release and the neutral start switch.
