Brand names aside, both lubricants bear the same designations. 5w being how the temperature when cold affects the pour point of the lube, second # being how the lube protects components (film strength) when at operating temp. If you follow recommended oil change intervals, either will perform fairly well, and better than conventional oil. I have done extensive research on lubricants and their properties as related to professional drag race engines which see far higher pressures, temps and general "abuse" when compared to the grocery getter. The major difference between lubricants from varying manufacturers is the additive and stabilizing chemical packages they add to the actual lubricant and the quality of the "base" oil which is essentially "cloned" to produce the synthetic. This package determines the lifespan of the product, based upon burn off rate, chemical changes from shear etc. Since many auto manufacturers have increased oil change intervals, if followed, any synthetic on the market today is pretty much OK to use. Do your own research if you want to exceed manufacturers requirements. One company, Amsoil, offers some really good lubricants that exceed every requirement in every application. There are other companies that also offer some good options. The final decision is up to you, but in average driving situations, as a general rule, just about any lube that meets manufacturers posted specifications should be OK>

What kind oil goes in a 1997 dodge neon 3 speed automatic

  • Here are the factory specs.

  • If the temperature in your area is mostly above 0 degrees the a 10W-30 is recommended.
  • If your climate is below an average below 32 degrees then 5W-30 is recommended.

  • Basically if you live in an area that is frigid most of the time a 5W30 would be recommended. If the climate where you live is a little warmer than a 10W30 is recommended --- Conventional is what's in the book but a Semi Synthetic or full Synthetic will be fine to so long as you stick with one type of oil. The brand is up to you but I prefer Quaker State,

What type of oil is best for my car when I go to change the oil?

Most common oil used today is sae 5W30 this usually is recommended by manufacturer.However when you take your car in for an oil change most garages apply to that unless other wise advised.I think 5W30 is most suitable.

What kind of oil do i use for a 2000 dodge carivan?

ENGINE OIL

You will need to use a 10W-30 grade engine oil, such as any of the following Mobil products.
"Fully synthetic" oils are more expensive. Conventional oils or syn blend engine oils are fine for the vehicle but need to be changed more frequently.

Mobil 1 Extended Performance 10W-30
fully synthetic motor oil ;
spacer.gif Mobil 1 High Mileage 10W-30
fully synthetic motor oil;
spacer.gif Mobil 1 10W-30
fully synthetic motor oil;

Mobil Clean 7500 10W-30
synthetic blend motor oil ;
spacer.gif Mobil Clean High Mileage 10W-30
a conventional motor oil;
spacer.gif Mobil Clean 5000 10W-30
a conventional motor oil .

What type and grade of oil should I use

I have a 1996 escort and use the recommended sae 5w30 oil. I also suggest using a Ford motorcraft oil filter (Wal mart sells them at some of their stores). As for the oil brand, I like the bigger name oil like Castrol, shell and Quaker state. I don't think you need a synthetic oil.

Can i use synthic oil? It has 91,100 miles as well.

yes
synthetic oil is the same as regular oil
use mobil 1
the only reason to go synthetic is to extend the oil change interval
don't use a cheap oil filter though

Engine oil

I use Quaker State (or you could use Castrol) 5W30. I think the oil lid tells you what to use if it's the orginal lid.
