You need to remove the steering wheel and the wheel lock collar then remove the signal switch plate.....on the left side of the steering shaft there is a single screw remove it and the ignition switch will slide out

I had this same problem and an experience diesel mechanic friend of mine told me to go to the dealer, any dealer that makes that model, with your title or registration and picture ID and the vin number on the vehicle and they will make you a key for $5.00. So that is what I did.
Much easier and faster than taking of the steering colom Good luck

Lost ignition key to 1989 gmc truck

If all you did was lose the key, copy down your vehicle identification number (VIN) which is on the dash, and take it and your registration and personal identification to the dealer to prove you are the owner. They can look up what you need and make you a key. :)

How do I pull the steering column to replace the key tumbler assembly? Keys lost.

i think that if you get a repair manual or do some searching on www.youtube.com you may find that you need to remove only the plastic cosmetic shroud and not the whole column to get this job done. tons of cheap repair manuals on ebay.

99 chevy astro ,lost key replaced steering column. now no start. pass-lock ignition, tried key on position for ten minutes 3 consecutive times, still no start. Got fuel and fire. It actually starts for...

Yes it sounds like a security system problem. Does the new column have pass key? You are leaving the key on until the security light stops flashing? The light is flashing for 10 minutes?

1989 Chevy 1 ton wont start

It is likely the electronic ignition control module. When they go, they just go bad and usually when you are driving.

If it was a smaller vehicle it could also be a timing belt but your's has a heavy duty valve train so no worries there.

How to install ignition switch 1989 ford escort

you may want to hear this, but you may need to call a locksmith, for example:i broke my key off in my 94 Bronco at my work and needed to drive home,i had tools, but without the key you can not turn the switch to ACC in order to push the release button on the bottom of the switch(done with a paper clip),so i had to hammer on the switch until it was broken enough to turn it,the risk is damage to the column where the switch wont stay in place or will not function properly. Then a new steering column will have to be installed, fortunately i didnt damage my column.A locksmith is usually about $100.00,its sad because it only takes them about 2 minutes to remove the switch.

Steering problem

What i can recall the only removable electronics is the complete turn signal assembly or the other would be the electronic piece that is actually the key reminder buzzer that reminds when key is left in ignition while engine is off...This looks like two flat copper match sticks attatched to a 1 inch piece of plastic... Well enough of my guesing.. if you were to go to an auto parts store and look at a motors repair manual for a chevy steering column little if anything has actually changed in the design with the tilt steering column which is probably why you originally took it apart because of the tilt torx bolts coming loose... I hope you used locktite when you reassembled to makesure it doesnt happen again....Good Luck
