1997 328i convertible top wont go down - motors not working at al

OK I am reaching here... i took my car to the dealer who told me a need a new motor.... around 2,000. I dont know how to re-engage the motor but would hope that the mechanic did and already tried that before recommending such an expensive repair. Just put 2K into a new transmission and Im getting frustrated with the car. Any suggestions?

If motor is not working at all , then it is likely the motor.

To test the motor you have to energize it connecting to 12V, it it spins then the motor is OK, if it does not, then you need to replace it.

Hi,First off, Are you refering to the Engine or the motor for the convertible top?

Did they give you a reason for the statement"You need new motor"
What was the diagnosis they came up with?

(It's easy to say you need a new motor,It's a little harder to say why)

Secondly,Take it for a second opinion at another dealer or even a non dealer location (And DO NOT TELL THEM,That you have already had it looked at.)Just tell them what you have noticed the car doing, not doing,or any sounds or smell you may have incountered.

Most shops can tell you what the problem is by running a few test.

Please post back with any new findings.

Please rate this fixya.

Hi!

I would not suggest you to repair your motor, as after a few months it will start behaving the same way as it is too old and moreover if that doesn't open in proper sync with other motorand can cause convertible top lid and trunk to make contact with each other and would thus damage one or other part.
What i suggest you is to buy a refurished motor or a used one.

Thanks
Rylee

You'll need to give more description as to what problems your experiencing. The topic heading suggests your having a problem with the convertable top motor, but then you indicate you had transmission work done too.

Your ignition coil misfires, most likely ruined the converter
before they reached 12 to 14 years of age

You need all ignition issues resolved, coil issues resolved,
new converters,new O2 Sensors etc

You have no choice & can expect to pay over a $1000

Unless you have the vehicle scoped a couple times a year
& data looked at, your going to keep getting into what your
have now. You just drive until it breaks down, That is what
everyone does & it won't work on todays technology.

Your intake manifold has to come of just to do spark plugs
& coils on that motor, which is a MAZDA

1996 saab 900s , cont. top didnt work at all, had "check latches" message. checked the system, pulled it apart and found the motor was installed incorrectly. had motor and position sensor...

You need to hook up the car to the factory tool, and check for codes. I think the lower limit for the main or 5th bow potentiometer needs to be adjusted. lots of service information at www.saabservices.com in the convertible top section

The convertible top on my 2001 BMW 325ic will now

DID the top just stop? Have you lowered it before? If you have lowered it before then I am sure you are doing it correctly (parking brake set) Go to a place that is familiar with repair convertible tops. Like the dealer or a bmw specialist. they should charge a couple hours or less to tell you what is wrong. You can try a couple of things yourself but even for an experienced mechanic it is difficult. If they have a bmw code reader and not a generic one, it may tell you what sensor or motor is at fault. Sometimes the switch itself goes bad. Try pushing farther down on the switch or apply pressure at an angle on the switch. That will only work if there is a bad contact on the switch, and if it works you have a bad switch, but I doubt it. Go into your manual or online and it will give you information on how to lower your top manually. When you lower your top manually you disengage the motor (which is in the trunk). Then you could try to engage the motor and see if it will lift up and close. Sometimes this will re-time the top and that is all that is needed. Otherwise get it to the dealer. If your mechanic wants 1000 he does not want to fix it or does not know how. The motor may cost a 1000, but usually it would make noises or poop before going out and most repairs are sensor related. Hope that helps

Convertible top has to be put down/up manually.

Just took my 2004 A4 convertible (25,000 miles) to the dealer...needed new module...cost $375 for part and $300 for labor. Maybe this should be a recall item.

Convertible Top "Sensor"??

Hello,
I'm sorry, the message I got was to clarify my problem, and the problem was this: The power top on my 2008 TT Roadster would neither go up nor down via electronic control, and the emergency remedy, a.k.a. release the pressure on the pistons via wild goose chase through a hole in the driver's side deep in the trunk. REMEDY:
I took the car to the dealership and they replaced the "convertible top flap motors". The top works, but they laughed when I asked for an emergency pair, even though the service manager told me that the emergency piston release remedy recommended in the manual was pretty much useless. I must say that aside from my bitter words about the problem, and my consternation, there are few things that are as relaxing as a cruise around the Croton Reservoir system with the top down.
