Question about 2004 Renault 181
Light just came on 5 mins from work
What is a 55 plate is this anything to do with a X or Y plate,So is their a problem here iam unaware of by any chance? But this vehicle is a renault which are a law unto themselves with encrypted software on earlier models making it impossible to use a code reader, now you havent stated if this is a diesel or a gas version ?.Now this emmision light on these cars can be thrown on by anything and everything to get you into the dealer worried stff then you end up with the bill with a meal at the ritz thrown in and from experiance of renault dealers your their next meal ticket. Now the most likely cause of this light is the O2 sensor of which their will be two on a four cylinder car and without being able to read codes without special dealer software then its down to testing the sensors with a multimeter which is quite simple to do ,disconnect the multiplug to the sensor and then on the two cables the same color to the sensor check for a continuety across these two wires ,then locate the same connections on the loom side of the multiplug and check for a 12v feed ,with ignition on of course, now re-connect the multiplug then start engine and the other two wires bre back the insultrion of push a pin through the cables and then measure the voltage ,sould be between 0.15 up to 0.850v voltage will vary on revving engine to max of 2500rpm.Replacing the O2 sesnor if faulty will not put the light out though as this is a dealer only job and from bitter experiances and disputes with then they charge what they like and say something else was wrong and take great delight in supplying a meal ticket of a bill with all these fancy bits and pieces that have been changed for no other reason than to pay for bosses kids in private school. This vehicle is one of the worst on the road for software and electrical problems although mechanicly superior to nearly all other europeon cars,The least problematic though is the peugeot or citreon but american cars can all be read with a cheap code reader by law compared to the keep it under your jumper europen cars which seem to get away with legalised rip offs in regarding the OBDII connection.
