Secondary Air Pump and MPG Gauge

Recently my service engine light came on and brought the codes P0492 & P0493. I was told it was the secondary air injection system. I then brought it in to get checked out and they told me the secondary air pump needed to be replaced. I did not have it fixed yet because I was told it was not urgent. However, now my MPG gauge is malfunctioning and it just started doing this since my engine light came on. I will be coasting towards a stoplight, no foot on either peddle, the MPG gauge will read 40MPG, and then as soon as I put my foot on the brake the MPG gauge goes down to 15MPG and then immediately switches directions and heads to 40MPG. When i begin accelerating it also hesitates before it begins to move. Could this be a direct cause of the secondary air pump?

Fist of all this is a 2009 vehicle and if you are having any problem with a secondary air pump with this NEW vehicle it should be under warranty or should be a recall and should be fixed for FREE, by BMW. This vehicle in my opinion is way too new to be having such problems, that pump must have been defective. I also believe that thier may be other problem going o with this vehicle. MY SUGGESTION IS TO TAKE THIS THING BACK TO BMW ADN HAVE THEM FIX ALL YOUR ISSUES FOR FREE. Good Luckand thanks for using FIX YA

Did you check the Vacuum lines to the Secondary air Valve Controls. They may be rotten. Can you do a Smoke test. Replace dry rotted lines with either 3/16 Fuel or Power Steering Hoses if you do not get ORM Vacuum lines/hoses. How hard is it to change a smog pump on a 2006 Saturn ion?


smog pump ? There is no such thing . What size engine does your ION have ? 2.0 , 2.2 ,2.4 L Has
secondary air injection system .

I have a service engine soon light on and have hooked up an OBD11 reader to it and got code P0410 pertaining to a secondary air injection problem. hoses are fine, pump is new.


P0410 Oldsmobile - Secondary Air Injection System Malfunction

Possible causes: - Faulty Vacuum hoses damaged
- Faulty Air Pump inoperative
- Air bypass solenoid harness is open or shorted
- Air bypass solenoid circuit poor electrical connection
- Air bypass solenoid leaking/blocked or stuck open/closed
- Air diverter valve leaking/blocked or stuck open/closed

Tech notes: Visually inspect AIR pump and AIR bypass valve harness and connector, if connector are OK, then replaced AIR bypass valve.

When is the code detected? The secondary air injection system does not detect the presence of air in the exhaust when introduced by the secondary air injection system.

Possible symptoms: - Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
- Engine hesitation

P0410 Oldsmobile Description An air pump is used on the vehicle to lower tail pipe emissions on start-up. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) grounds the Air pump relay control circuit which energizes the Air pump. The PCM also grounds the Air combination valve vacuum control solenoid circuit, which energizes the Air vacuum control solenoid. Vacuum is then applied to both Air combination valve diaphragms which opens the shut off valves. The PCM enables both circuits simultaneously when Air system operations id desired. When the AIR system is active, then Air pump forces fresh air into the exhaust stream in order to accelerate catalyst operation. The AIR combination valves replace the conventional check valves. When the AIR system is inactive the shut off valves prevent air flow in either direction.

these refer to the secondary air intake system , insufficient flow . this could be an electrical fault or a component such as the relay , solenoid etc, follow this link for more info

I replaced my secondary air check valve on my 2001 chevy tahoe but code 1416 still comes up. what else can i check

P1416 Chevrolet Description
An Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump is used on this vehicle to lower tail pipe emissions on start-up. The PCM supplies a ground to the AIR pump relay, which energizes the AIR pump. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) monitors the HO2S voltages to diagnose the AIR system. During the AIR test the PCM activates the AIR pump during closed loop operation. When the AIR is activated, the PCM monitors the HO2S voltages and short term fuel trim values for both banks of the engine. If the AIR system is operating properly, the HO2S voltages should go low and the short term fuel trim should go high.

1998 328i.. Got a 1421 and 1423 code...not sure where to start...


1997 BMW 328I 2.8L Customer Concern: MIL is on with trouble codes P1421 and P1423, for incorrect secondary airflow on both cylinder banks. Tests/Procedures: 1. Perform a functional test of the Air Injection Reaction (AIR) system. Tee a vacuum gauge into the vacuum hose attached to the diverter valve, located on the cylinder head towards the front of the engine.

2. Allow the vehicle to sit over night. Start the engine (cold) while monitoring the amount of vacuum on the gauge at startup. At temperatures from -10 to 40 degrees Celsius, there should be at least 17 inches of vacuum. At the same time, the AIR pump should run and pump a large volume of air into the exhaust. Potential Causes: A.I.R. Pump
Air Pump Relay
Restricted Cylinder Head
Diverter Valve
Tech Tips: These codes are related to a problem detected in the Secondary Air Injection system. Scan tools with BMW software include a feature to command the AIR pump on and off. The pattern failures for these codes are the AIR pumps due to leaks in the diverter valve and moisture or condensation in the AIR pump.

Possible fix but not all items. Just areas to look at:

I'm not sure if you fixed your problem yet but I had some similar gremlins on my 2001 540. Just a word of advice. Ensure that the tube from the air pump to the manifold is clear. This can occasionally get blocked and this is what causes the air pump to over heat and fail in the first place. after replacing a couple of air pumps, I learned this the hard way.
