Why does it get stuck in park

Chris: According to MyAutomaticTransmission.com: "Shifter Lever

Recognizing that you might one day find yourself in such a predicament, vehicle manufacturers incorporated a quick and easy method for manually releasing a shifter stuck in Park. Follow these 4 simple steps.

1. Set the emergency brake.

2. Locate the shifter lock override slot located on the shifter console near the shifter lever. Normally, the slot is plugged with a small plastic cap.

3. Remove the plastic cap covering the override slot and insert a key, nail file or similarly shaped object into the slot and push down.

4. While pushing down, depress the brake pedal, grab the shifter and push in the shifter lock button located on the shifter as you normally do and then move the shifter to the Neutral position. With the brake pedal still depressed, start the engine with the shifter in the Neutral position.

NOTE: If the shifter lever will still not move, repeat the process making sure to press down firmly on the locking mechanism and the brake pedal simultaneously as you attempt to move the shifter lever.

NOTE: Continuing to drive your vehicle in this condition will not cause any additional damage. You will just have to use this procedure to release the shifter each time you attempt to move the shifter out of the Park position." I hope this helps you!

What won't my shifter move on my 2006 Dodge Grand Caravan?

Part of the safety features on vehicles prevent the shifter from moving until you apply the brakes. If you could move the shifter without applying the brakes, the vehicle could move unintentionally and cause an accident.

Shift lever won't go to park and moves stiff even while pushing on metal lever on the side of the transmission

The first thing i would do is to disconnect the cable at the lever on the ******, next move the lever at the ****** by hand and it should move by hand with little force. if the lever is hard to move then you may have a trany shift rod problem. next with cable removed try to go through the gears with the shifter , the shifter should flow with ease if its hard to move then its the shifter cable or the shifter itself. to find out which one you will need to disconnect cable at sifter and then move the shifter to see if its still tight. if the shifter is tight to move with cable removed then its the shifter but if it moves with ease then you have a bad cable. good day.

I HAVE A 98 GRAND CHEROKEE STUCK IN ALL WHEEL DRIVE AND THE SHIFTER MOVES FREELY

You may have broken a retainer clip on the linkage. Raise the vehicle and look where the shifter comes through the floor while a helper moves the shifter. Verify the linkage arm moves with the shifter. If not, then look closely at the linkage arm and bottom of the shifter shaft to see if either broke or if the clip is missing.
Good luck!

1992 dodge dynasty shifter stuck

It may be stuck due to pressure from being parked on a hill. If that is the case get help to push the car up the hill releaving the presure and the shifter should move. Note someone has to try moving the shifter while the car is held pushed up the hill. If a hill or incline is not the probllem, go under the hood and disconnect the shift cable. With the cable disconnected try to shift the car at trans. Use help so car doesn't roll when checking. If you can move the shift linkage at trans, try moving the shifter. If it doesn't move the shift cable will need replaced. To double check this also disconnect the cable at the other end and try to move the shifter, it should move. That confirms the cable is bad.

Repair gear shift

If your shifter won't move at all a couple of things can be wrong. first if you are parked on a hill you have to push the car up the hill while someone tries to move the shifter. In a case like this there is too much pressure on the transmission to allow the shifter to move. Next the cable may be frozen or broken to check have someone in the car hold the brake down so car will not move and disconnect the cable from the transmission and see if you can shift the trans. If you can shift the trans the trans is fine. Now have the person in the car try to move the shifter while it is still disconnected. if it won't move the cable is probably bad. to find out you have to take the shifter apart to get to the other end. When you do this if the cable moves freely when off at both ends the shifter is the problem. Don't worry you normally don't have to do every test because you usually find the problem fairly quickly and the tests don't take a lot of time. Good Luck!

Shifter won't move from park, I've try to move forward and backword but dosen't work.

does your shifter move , or is the shifter sliding back and fourth and the car doesnt move, if the shifter seems dead, it sounds like the linkage for your shifter has broken off, this is actaully an easy fix, it either broke or disconnected at the trans or the shifter , you can check to see the lever at the trans , have someone move the shifter and look under the car and see if it moves the shift lever, if not you may need to look under the shifter to see if the connection is broken.

Will not shift out of park

can you move the shifter and it wont go into gear or will the shifter not move at all?? if shifter wont move, there is an electrical solinoid that will not allow the shifter to release when the car is off, that could be faulty, i think it also has a safety mechanism that wont allow it to shift if your foot is not on the brake? if the shifter moves through prn321 but the trans wont come out of park, you have broken the shifter cableand or damaged the shifter mechanism in the trans. hope i have been of some assistance
