Question about 1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport

Squeaking noise coming when car starts and turning right?

Hi! I have a 1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport. The other day, the car made a very loud squeaking noise when I turned right, but not when I turned left. I went into the store I was going to, and when I started the car later the squeaking noise happened when I started the car, but not when I was turning. It seems to either happen when the car starts or when I turn right, but never together. If it happens when I start the car, it doesn't happen when I turn right. If it happens when I turn, it doesn't happen when I start the car. Any ideas would be helpful. I'm almost positive it's a belt, but not sure which belt. Perhaps the power steering belt? Or maybe more than one? Thanks so much!

The fact that it happens when turning would lead me to believe that it is the power steering belt. Check your belts for tension, cracks, glazed and any other condition that would warrant replacement. If to much deflection when checking the belts at the longest stretch of belt adjust the belt.

Try applying brakes slightly when squeak occurs, and see if noise goes away or changes.

SOURCE: 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee squeaking and power steering

The squeaking is definately from the belts.
Have you tried adjusting them ?
Since now the power steering has failed it could be due to the power steering pump bearings, may be tight to rotate and thus the squeaking noise, or you may just need to replace the belts.
WD-40 wouldnt work permanently..try using STP belt dresser.
Hope this helps!

SOURCE: Jeep Cherokee - Sqeaking Undercarriage

i have the exact same problem, cant for the life of me pinpoint the problem. i dont think its the belt or tensioners because it remains constant regardless of speeds over 15-20mph- does go away under those speeds though. especially bad when cold or wet, non existent when weather is good. very annoying. you can only hear it when driving- cannot simulate it when idiling or pulling throttle cable when in park.

Why has steering started squeaking loudly when parking or low speed turning?

I would say it have to be bad joints or breaks.

Steering is all electronics these days so it can only be loosen.

Jeep Cherokee - Sqeaking Undercarriage

If the "sqeak" is more pronoused while going over bumps, then it is most likely a bushing in the front end. Check your fuel tank straps also, they may be loose. Sounds like this are always a pain to locate. Make sure nothing is in the back cargo area. You can also take your foot and shake the exhaust, WHILE THE CAR IS COOLED OFF OF COURSE.
You can also push down on each corner of the vehicle in the front and stand on the rear bumper to try to simulate or isolate the noise. That's all I have for ya. Good luck.

I have a sqeaking noise from the front end. We thought it may be a u-joint, but the service center checked it out and could not find it. U-joints all checked out OK. Located in WI. The colder it gets, the...

Even if the joints appear to be OK, often they run dry and are rusted inside. Unfortunately you cannot see that unless you remove the axle and visually check them out.
You have universal joints in there? I thought they began using c/v joints right around 2000. Check that the brake pad sensors are not hitting the rotors as well that can make a squeaking noise. Before taking anything apart, try to determine which side the noise is on.

Belt squeaks when AC turns on

Your belt is not tight enough. Are you using the power steering pump to adjust? (right way) or doing something else? Keep tension on the pump and tighten the pivot bolt first.
