Fuel cut out light on 1996 escort

Fuel cut out light flashing and check engine light. Checked the fuel shut off switch but it is already pushed down. This happened literally as I was driving away from the shop to have my shocks repaired.

SOURCE: fuel cut off switch for 1990/91 ford escort 1.9

The "inertia switch" which shuts off fuel to the engine in the event of a collision or jolt on a 1991 through 1996 models, as well as on 1998 coupes, is located in the rear of the vehicle, near the right (passenger's side) strut tower. On sedan and coupe models, open the trunk and remove the right-sided trim panel. On sedan and coupe models, open the trunk and remove the right-side trim panel. On hatchback and wagon models, there may be an access door secured by clips. On some models you may need to remove the lower quarter trim panel on the right side, however it is easier to cut an access hole directly above the switch.

I hit a deer with my 96 Ford escort. It drive for another 15 minutes, then quit and won't start. I checked the fuel cut off and the button is still down. Any suggestions on what else it could be?

For something like this, its all a guess. We don't know how much metal was pushed towards the engine. What could have happened is a wire was pulled toward the engine and a belt or pulley cut through the wire. I dismissed loss of coolant because it could restart after the engine cooled down. So I would not blame coolant but it could be checked.

Another idea is a cracked battery, which after losing electrolite would not be at full charge. Then the oil pan could have a hole in it and after losing oil, the engine could have shut down.

There is nothing wrong with the Inertia Fuel Shut Off Switch

It is down & closed, as it should be & you haven't been in an accident, forget it

What are you missing?

Fuel,Spark, MAF

Have to start testing, if the starter turns the engine over

My 1991 escort wont start. the fuel cutoff light comes on when i try, but ive already checked the switch above the right wheel well. it hasent been tripped yet the car still wont start.

If you push down on the red button on the fuel cut-off I bet you'll find it is tripped, and you just don't see it. The cut-off doesn't pop up a noticeable amount when it trips, but can still be tripped. If you find it hasn't been tripped, try disconnecting your battery for about 20 minutes to reset the computer. I've seen the cut-off trip in many escorts simply from hitting a bump on the road. Please let me know what you find.

2002 Escort wont start after crash. No logical reason. Is there resets or sensors?

There is a fuel shut-off switch that stops the flow of fuel in an accident to prevent the occupants from becoming crispy critters. I believe it is in the trunk on Fords. Just push the button in to allow fuel to get to the engine. I'll check to see if I can find the exact location. Back in a few minutes.

It will not start /what does fuelcutoff mean

all fords come with a fuel shut off switch, when cars get older they seem to be a little more tempromental. If you look in your manual under fuel shut off switch it will tell you where it is located in your car, all you need to do is reset it by pushing the button and you should be ok.

This switch is made to cut the fuel from going to the engine when in an accident. I don't know exactly where it is on your model but i believe it is in your trunk.
