SOURCE: Automatic Transmission shifts late and rough after warm

If it has over 60000 miles it may need a transmission service, which includes a filter and fluid change, fluid may look fine but if filter is clogged and not picking up fluid fast enough when u give it gas the pump spins faster and forces fluid thru to shift, more fluid is needed to shift into higher gear.than to drive

SOURCE: Transmission fluid type and level

This is complicated.... Ok, your right, no dip stick is there! This is how it works.
Underneath the car, there is a plug (11mm) on the transmission case on the passenger side. It is about 3" up from the pan edge and on the front side of the case. With the engine running in PARK, remove this plug. If trans fuild doesn't run out of the hole, the level is low. Pour it in the hole on top (where the red cap is) until the fluid runs out - all while the car is running. Once it is roughly dribbling out, the trans is considered full. replace plug. Your done!!
Easy ehh? Dexron III fluid

your transmission has possibly been rebuilt with stronger springs put in. No worries. have been running mine for along while without any problems. Better this than slipping, but it is a bit annoying.

There are 6 solenoids in the trans. Very rarely are these ever bad as it is nearly always mechanical failure. Solenoids are under pan though.

Would start by checking linkage or the cable that runs to tranny. Tranny fluid level is correct? Check fluid level first. Run 15-20 mins and check with motor warmed and running

Check the fluid level. The symptoms you describe can be caused by low fluid level. If this is OK, I suggest you take it to a specialist automatic transmission repairer urgently.

I have a 2003 jetta automatic, 2.0 doen't want to move when shifted into drive unless I tap the gas pedal then it lurches forward and is fine the rest of the day.

Since there is no dipstick to check your fluid level, I recommend changing your transmission fluid and filter and make sure that it is filled to the proper level with the proper fluid. I believe the capacity is 3.2 qts. and I use Castrol Transmission Fluid for Imports. You can double check the capacity and use another brand of fluid that is compatible at your parts store. Just make sure that the fluid you get is compatible and that it is filled to the proper level. To refill your transmission there is a dipstick tube adapter on the front side of the transmission. It is just an elbow with a red or black cap that is o-ring sealed and will have a lock ring on it that you can remove with a small screwdriver. Use a funnel that has a "Measuring cup" and a hose on it so you can measure out the fluid. Hope this helps.

If the trans fluid is a little burnt will the overdrive not engage?

hi

BURNT transmission fluid ??

i hope you just mean dark or discoloured.

any problem with the transmission fluid could cause problems shifting. the first thing to do would be to change the fluid and filters. without the model of car, i can only refer you to your owners manual for spec on this.

Car won't accelerate and when it does it jerks hard. can't get over 50 mph

MAKE SURE YOUR ENGINE FINE TUNE. CHECK TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL.IF FLUID LEVEL OKAY.DO A FILTER AND TRANSMISSION FLUID CHANGE IF ONE HAS NOT BEEN DONE A LONG LONG TIME.SOUND LIKE TRANSMISSION SLIPPING. IF FLUID + FLUID LEVEL OKAY AND FILTER HAS ALREADY BEEN DONE.YOUR TV SHIFT CABLE LOOSE NEED ADJUSTING. IF YOU SEE A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT FLASHING LOOK FOR TRANSMISSION FAULT CODES LIKE TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SOLENOID OPEN OR FAULTY TORQUE CONVERTER.YOU COULD HAVE FAULTY SHIFT VALVES.BEST GET CAR CODE SCAN.YOU HAVE MANY SHIFT VALVES.

Have a 1985 Mercedes 300D. Transmission fluid line rubbed against engine and created a hole. 2 1/2 quarts of fluid leaked out. Fixed the line. Put in fresh Dexron iii/m. Container said also suitable for...

Unless you observed the utmost in cleanliness when repairing the line and addling fluid, you may have gotten some junk in the tranny. The smallest impurity in transmission fluid can cause operational difficulties. If your lucky (and clean) you may have simply under or overfilled the trans. This can cause the shift points to change dramatically. Check the fluid level again. If you're not sure how to properly check the trans. fluid: park on a very level surface night before checking level, next morning depress parking brake and allow engine to run for 2-3 minutes before checking. Use a clean lint free rag to check level on the dipstick. If you are over full, drain some fluid off until you get it right, obviously if you are still low, add some more. Dextron-Mercon is a suitable trans. fluid for your car.
