This sounds like a wheel bering. If you turn left on a bad passengerside bering it growls louder because more pressure is shifted onto it.

1st have the brake pads checked, then if the pads are OK you likely have a defective wheel bearing/hub assembly

98 vw Jetta GL 2.0 5 spd manual. Grinding noise/crackling coming from front left wheel side. Both at start up but when the car is driving does it as well. I just need more thoughts on it thanks!

That was hard to hear, but my first thought was the rubber bushing on the top of your strut.
If those go bad, you get a rattle JUST like that while driving.
It can also shake around on start up.

If that doesn't help, other possible solutions may be wheel bearing (hub bearing) or CV axles.

even still, it could be very bad motor mounts.

check into my first guess and let me know.

Do you feel like the alignment is bad now?

Could also be control arm bushings.

Jack the car up until the tire in an inch off the ground and grab the tire in the 9 & 3 o'clock positions and try to shake it side to side. (as if you were trying to turn the steering side to side)

You shouldn't be able to shake it more than a tiny bit. (It should be firm and far from loose)

If it shakes, you can have a look at the top of the strut and the control arm bushings while doing so to figure out which one is messed up.

If neither shake, It may lean toward the hub bearing.

Yet another possible is the steering rack...... but I honestly think its the strut bushings.

Have a helper look at it with you as you shouldn't be near a lifted car without back-up.

Hope this helps.

Hello i would check your wheel bearings or sometimes called bearing hub .Jack car up prop the car with axle stands now remove your tires and rotors once removed wiggle you bearing hub left to the right your bearing hub should have minimal play one side to the other is obvious the looser play hub will be your noise you have been experiencing.most people call this road noise.

If the vehicle is running with the standard factory 15 inch (diameter) by 6 inch (wide) wheels, the tire size used with this wheel fitment was 195/65/15.

The sizes on the tires you have fitted now are found on the side wall of each tire.
